Do you remember the Pet Rock ? It was a gimmicky gag gift, marketed as an alternative to the traditional living, breathing pet, that briefly trended during the tense sociopolitical years of the mid-1970s.

Despite being literally just a rock — albeit a rock resting on some straw inside a cardboard crate with air holes — the Pet Rock made its creator a cool $15 million.

  1. Plants Make Economical Decorations

It can be expensive to decorate your home! Unless you have a lot of creativity and a lot of time to DIY your decor, you might have to resign yourself to a pretty boring environment. Unless, of course, you use plants to decorate.

Plants can be had for a song, and some of them last for years. Not only that, but they are pretty low-cost to maintain, too. Best of all, there is a huge variety of flora to choose from, depending on your own personal style.

  1. Plants Help Purify the Air

You probably remember from science class in elementary school that trees and plants emit oxygen and use carbon dioxide — the exact opposite of how humans breathe!

Not only that, but many plants actually remove dust, mold, and other harmful toxins from the air. These include chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde, which can be off-gassed from certain plastics.

Filling your home with plants is a fantastic way to get a cleaner environment and help you breathe more easily. Some are better than others for acting as natural air filters, so do your research.

  1. Plants Are Pretty

Do you know anyone who doesn’t enjoy looking at flowers, trees, or greenery? We didn’t think so. There’s plenty of scientific and anecdotal evidence that being near nature can relax and calm us.

While there’s no substitute for spending time in a forest or meadow, do the next best thing and bring the outdoors indoors!

  1. Some Plants Are Useful

Plenty of houseplants are more than just aesthetic decorations. There’s nothing like cooking with fresh herbs like rosemary. Aloe vera is soothing and healing for burns and other skin issues.

Lavender is wonderfully aromatic and has been shown to help ease anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The same goes for jasmine, which needs plenty of sunshine but which you can place by your bed at night for soothing aromatherapy benefits.

  1. Plants Are Largely Low-Maintenance

People who live with mental illness can have a hard time taking care of themselves, let alone animals or children. Yet tending a plant can be doable for people with depression or other mental illness issues. As they care for something and watch it thrive, it can help build self-esteem.

Naturally, the fact that plants don’t need much beyond sunlight and water makes them the perfect decor for people with busy schedules! Learn more about why plants can be better than pets for travelers, for example.
