How can one know when a plumber should be called and when they can attempt to fix the problem without assistance? This is a difficult question for many, and the answer truly isn’t simple either.

However, the following are some guidelines to use when making this critical choice.

When to Call a Professional

Certain tasks require a professional to be called in, and property owners need to recognize this. For example, when the time comes to vent a washing machine drain pipe, a plumber is required.

Why is this the case? If not properly vented, the drain will likely be noisy and sluggish. More importantly, it could release hazardous fumes into the residence.

If the drain isn’t vented correctly, large quantities of water could be pulled from the P-trap and enter the air, damaging the health of the home’s occupants.

For this reason, this task and many others need to be left to the professionals.

However, that is not always the case, and property owners need to recognize the differences between the two situations.

Handling the Matter On Your Own

If the pump filter is clogged, this is a task the property owner can and should carry out. In fact, completing regular maintenance tasks can be of great help in ensuring the washing machine operates properly at all times.

Insurance companies likewise recommend property owners ensure the machine remains level at all times, and examine the hoses routinely to make certain they are not cracked or damaged in any way.

Simple tasks such as these can be of great help in ensuring the appliance remains functional for the longest time possible.

Knowing the Difference

One thing property owners need to keep in mind when determining whether they should take on a washing machine repair or leave it to the professionals is the risk of water damage.

The insurance industry reports 14,000 homes are damaged each day by the water, and insurance companies pay out $2.5 billion each year to rectify this damage and damage caused by mold that results from a job that was not carried out properly.

Washing machine hoses fail, water heaters leak and a small crack in a pipe can lead to 250 gallons of water being lost every day.

If there is any doubt as to the homeowner’s ability to complete a plumbing job correctly, leave it to the professionals. They will ensure the job is done right, any damage is identified, and all problems are corrected.

One thing should be kept in mind when determining if a plumber should be called in. What may appear to be a small leak could actually be a much bigger problem.

The damage is simply hidden in the walls or under floors. If this damage is not fixed, mold and mildew could begin to grow in the home and harm the occupants.

For this reason alone, many individuals choose to call in a plumber whenever they discover they have a leak or other plumbing issue.

Doing so provides them with peace of mind, as they know they have done everything possible to protect their health and that of their loved ones. No price can be put on this.
