As exciting as it can be, moving is stressful. There’s a lot of time dedicated to the process. But there are ways to make it all easier.

Don’t let this process get the best of you. Try these 3 smart moving tips and the 1 essential tip for an easier time changing house.

Get Organized

You may be tempted to throw your things into a box. Resist the urge. Packing your belongings in an organized way  is going to be better in the long run.

Not only will you be able to keep track of what you’re packing; when you’re unpacking, you’ll know where everything is. Pack up one room at a time and keep all those items together. Make a list of your items and what boxes they’re in.

Lable the boxes clearly by room or color code the boxes to keep track. Number your boxes by room. This way, you know how many have, and if you can’t find a box, you’ll know what it is and what’s inside it.

Declutter While You Pack

If you meant to do some spring cleaning, now’s the time. While you’re going room by room and packing, figure out what you will take with you to your new place. Don’t move anything you no longer need.

Separate your items into piles to toss, keep, sell, and donate. Think about whether or not you’ll use it in your new home. It’s time to say goodbye to any clothes that are too small, shoes you never wear, or furniture that won’t match your new home.

Not only will this make you’re packing lighter, but you might also get a few bucks out of it.

Pack Up Fragile Items First

Your breakable items should get specialized attention. Because of their fragile status, you will want to pack them first. Picture frames, vases, and any decor are candidates for this.

Take time to wrap each item up and properly pack them together. Don’t fill your box to the brim, and don’t leave any open space. Newspapers, packing peanuts, and bubble wrap are all great cushions for fragile items.

Your home might be bare, but it’s better than trying to find a place for a few picture frames. You also don’t want to run the risk of breaking anything while packing lager items.

The Essential Tip

Finally, the most essential moving tip: Make your bed as soon as you get to your new place. This has more to do with your move-in process than your move-out. Still, you’re going to be thankful you did this.

When you get to your new place, you may be tempted to rip open the boxes and start unpacking.

Do this instead: While packing up your old place, put your bed linen in a separate box, and take it with you. Then, when you arrive at your new home, make your bed. At least put on the sheets, comforter, and pillowcases.

After a long day of unpacking, you’ll be thankful you can fall right into some clean sheets.

A Stress Less Move

It may seem impossible, but a stressless move is entirely achievable. It will take some preparation, but you’ll be enjoying your new home in no time.

Hiring a moving company can take some of the pressure off your shoulders. See what perks a moving company offers.
