When was the last time you changed your furnace filter? If you can’t remember, then odds are it is time. The furnace filter has an important job and reduces the amount of dust and debris that enters the main furnace housing.

If it wasn’t there, then the dust and debris lead to malfunctions with the furnace, reduction in air quality, and fire hazards. It’s recommended that you change the HVAC filter once every six months. We created this guide to help you know how to replace a furnace filter.

It’s vital to your furnace to replace the filter properly or else it can lead to furnace problems.’

How to Replace a Furnace Filter: Remove the Old One

Go to your furnace and see where the filter is housed. For many, it’s in plain sight and can be removed without opening the furnace. Some models require you to remove the main panel of the furnace to get to the furnace filter.

Remove the filter and see what size it is. There are many different sizes and types of filters, such as the 16x20x1 furnace filter. If you don’t think you can remember the size and type, then take a picture of it with your phone.

Replace the filter and head to your local hardware store.

Pick Out the New Furnace Filter

When you visit the hardware store, you’ll see filters of every shape and size. Therefore, taking a picture of the old filter is helpful.

Find the right make and model of the filter and double-check to make sure it is the right one. They are different filters for furnace types including for a ductless heating system. Filters look similar, so just because it looks like the old one doesn’t mean it’s the same kind.

Purchase the furnace filter and head back to the house.

Changing Your Furnace’s Filter

Start by removing the old filter and then compare it with the new one. The old filter looks dirty and dingy while the new one is white and pristine.

Take the old one and dispose of it in the trash. The filter will have arrows telling you the correct direction for the filter to face. Slide it into the casing until it fits into place and replace the cover.

Make sure the filter is firmly in place and a part of it isn’t sticking out. If there is any space, then dirt and debris make it inside the furnace.

You Replaced Your Furnace Filter

A dirty filter causes the furnace to work too hard and may end up shutting down. It’s only by routinely replacing the filter can you guarantee your furnace will continue working.

We hope this guide helps you understand how to replace a furnace filter. It’s not a major undertaking, but a necessary one to keep your furnace running smoothly when you need it.
