Decorating with Used Stuff – Room Design

Home decorating from scratch can become expensive. Buying new furniture and accessories can be quite costly. New furniture like couches and bedroom set can cost upwards of hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

Discarding used but otherwise good stuff is also wasteful and environmentally unfriendly. Unless someone else takes your used things for their new purposes, household stuff like furniture and decorations often ends up in landfills. Instead of buying all new things to decorate your home with, check out these tips and ideas for decorating a home with used stuff.

Decorate Your Room – Refurbish Old Furniture

Sometimes the simplest solution to home decoration is to refurbish old furniture, both your own and pieces you find at yard sales or secondhand shops. Refurbishing old pieces can be as simple as applying a new coat of paint to a bench or dresser or as complex as reupholstering a chair or sofa.

Paint and fabric are inexpensive, and doing the work yourself cuts out the cost of paying for a professional. Refurbishing used pieces also costs much less than buying new furniture. For example, instead of buying new furniture for a nursery, I spent under $50 to paint my old bed frame, side table, and dresser for the nursery in my new house.

If you choose to refurbish an old piece of furniture, first decide if you want the piece to be the focal point of the room or a background element of your decorating scheme. Creating a focal point might mean painting a cabinet bright blue or upholstering a sofa a funky pattern. Using a neutral shade of paint or fabric is an easy way of turning used furniture into background pieces. Keep in mind that refurbishing old furniture is both less expensive and more environmentally friendly than buying new.

Showcase Your Favorite Things – Interior Design House

Many of a homeowner’s or renter’s favorite things are old or used. Using used stuff for home decorating is therefore a great way to showcase your favorite things. If you have a favorite piece of furniture or unique collection, use these things as the centerpiece of your décor. For example, if you have a collection of funky glassware, decorate the tops of your kitchen cupboards with your collection instead of buying new accent pieces.

Showcase Your Favorite Things

If your favorite chair in the whole wide world is the old rocking chair passed down to you by your frugal great aunt, use this chair as the centerpiece of your living room and choose complementing lines and colors for the rest of the room. Showcasing your favorite things is a good way to save money while decorating your home as well as to minimize the time spent on choosing a theme or idea for your décor.

Use Ordinary Objects in Extraordinary Ways – Modern Interior Design

Decorating a home with used stuff does not necessarily meant that you need to pull out the painting tarp or redesign the entire décor of a room. Instead, think repurposing old items in new ways. For example, use old glassware such as vases, pitchers, and glasses as storage containers for your bathroom counters.

Use pretty towels as table clothes, place mats, and window coverings. Stacks of books can be used to display picture frames at different heights on a table or shelf. Old glass tea pots and cups make excellent and safe flower pots and candle holders. Using ordinary objects in extraordinary ways adds a touch of uniqueness to your décor while reusing old items that might otherwise be thrown out, ending up in a landfill.

Decorating a house can end up being both expensive and environmentally unfriendly. These simple ideas and tips offer great alternatives to decorating a home from scratch by decorating a home with used stuff.
