Depending on your personal habits, you shower anywhere from every other day to twice daily . There’s no right or wrong answer here; it’s good to do what’s best for your body.

Regardless of the frequency though, there comes a time when your shower gets a little backed up. You’ve done everything you can to keep the drain clear, but it eventually happens to everyone.

Not to worry though, as you can clear your drains and get back to scrubbing yourself clean in no time.

Below are some ways to unclog a shower drain if yours is backed up!

Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain

The first thing you should do if you have a clogged shower is pour boiling water down the drain. Often, you’ll have a buildup of shower products that can become quite gunky and block water flow.

You might have to repeat this several times, but eventually, you’ll break down the gunk and your clogged shower drain will be clear!

Do note that you should only do this if your pipes are metal. If you’ve got PVC pipes, then boiling water can loosen the joints.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Is boiling water not working? Then it’s time to bring out the big guns with baking soda and vinegar.

Mix equal parts of baking soda and vinegar, then pour it down the drain immediately when it fizzes. Let it work its magic for at least 1 hour.

Then flush the pipes with hot or boiling water. The drain should be clear now.

Use a Coat Hanger

Maybe it’s not gunk that’s blocking your shower drain, but rather, your hair. In this case, all the hot water, baking soda, and vinegar in the world might not remove the clog!

You’ll need to unscrew the shower drain cover and then put a straightened coat hanger down. You might want to wear some gloves since it won’t be pleasant.

You can then poke around and fish out anything that’s blocking your shower drain. After, pour boiling water in to flush out any remaining debris.

Call a Professional

If the clog seems serious, then it’s time to ditch the DIY methods. You need to look for a “plumbing company near me“, then get them in ASAP.

Don’t try to unblock your drain further, as it can cause damage. When the plumber arrives, it’ll be an expensive issue to fix, so leave the shower drain alone.

You’ll want to explain what you’ve tried so the plumber can get a better idea of what may be causing the blockage.

Unclog a Shower Drain in No Time

There are several ways to unclog a shower drain on your own. By using these methods, you won’t have to spend money getting a plumber in.

But if you realize the blockage is big and serious, then don’t hesitate to call a pro. This can prevent more expensive problems from arising.
