Renovations & Storage Tips: What to Do with Your Belongings

Whether you are renovating your kitchen or bathroom to make it more spacious and comfortable or to add value to your home, you will need a place to store items. While some homeowners choose to pack up their items and move them out of the house, others choose to rent various storage facilities.

If you’re about to embark on a home renovation, the last thing you need is for the rest of your life to be disrupted. Luckily, with a few simple tips and some forethought, you can make your home renovations go much more smoothly.

Here are some tips to help you out:

Organize Your Items

The first step in preparing for a storage project is grouping things into categories. For instance, if you’re renovating a kitchen, designate boxes for kitchenware and appliances and keep them separate from other items like clothing or furniture.

This way, on moving day, it will be easier to identify which box goes where when putting everything back in its place. It’s also important to label each box with what’s inside and the room they belong in.

By doing this, you can avoid the hassle of having to search through the box when you need something specific.

Take an inventory of everything that will be going into storage so you know what you have, can plan where they’ll go, and have a list to check off when loading things in and taking them out of the unit.

You’ll want to sort your items into categories and create a floor plan of your unit. The last thing you want is to be digging through boxes of winter clothes in mid-August looking for your beach umbrella.

  • Inventory: Take an inventory of everything you own, including pictures, descriptions, and serial numbers of items. This will make it easier to find what you need, plus it will help you with insurance claims should any damage occur.
  • Label: Don’t forget to label all boxes — especially if you have several for each room in your home. And don’t just write “kitchen” or “living room” on the outside. Be specific! That way, when you’re looking for your Christmas tree decorations or camping gear, you know exactly which box to look in.
  • Pallets: Place pallets under furniture and appliances to prevent them from getting wet or dirty and to make it easier for cleaning services to take care of your unit. You can also purchase plastic covers from storage facilities for added protection from dust and dirt.
  • Appliances: Make sure all appliances are clean and dry before storing them away. Store them with their doors slightly open so that air can circulate throughout the unit.

Take photos of large pieces of furniture and electronics before disassembling them, so you’ll know how they go back together when construction is done. This also prevents parts from getting lost or confused with other pieces.

Use Boxes

This is a great way to help keep your belongings safe during the renovation process. You should also consider using plastic bags for items that you need to keep organized and clean, these can be easily sealed and stored away for future use.

When packing up your belongings, make sure that you use boxes that are sturdy and have strong handles so they can be easily moved around by hand. You can easily keep the boxes together with duct tape or zip ties.

Try not to leave anything behind in case there is something in your home that needs attention such as mold or pests.

Get Rid of The Junk You No Longer Need

Every home renovation project is an opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need, use or want. The first step in any storage plan is to go through rooms and closets, identifying items that can be thrown out or donated. Free up as much space as possible before starting the renovation.

Rent Out Space from Various Storage Facilities

When you’re renovating your home, it can be difficult to find a place to store everything. The work might be confined to one room, but your belongings are not. From furniture and appliances to carpets and curtains, the things you need to store can range from big to bulky.

Renting a storage unit can be the perfect, affordable solution for homeowners who need a place to store their belongings during a home renovation or remodeling project.

Think about it – You don’t want your valuables damaged in any way due to dust, debris, or other construction mishaps.

But where can you put your items? Many people rent out self-storage units to avoid having to move all of their belongings from one place to another. With a self-storage unit, you can pack up the things you need to store and then simply drive them over to your local storage facility.

Self-Storage Units Are Ideal for Virtually Any Home Renovation Project

Whether you’re replacing flooring or installing new cabinetry and countertops, you should consider renting a self-storage unit in order to protect your belongings. And because most storage facilities offer multiple sizes of units, you can easily find one that will suit your needs.

Takeaway

The key to a good storage plan is to keep it simple. The best way to do this is by paring down your possessions. Get rid of everything you haven’t used in a year, even if you really like it!

This will keep your storage plan manageable, and ensure that what you have leftover is worth something to you. It’s also a good idea to get organized in advance.

If you know where things are and they’re easy to find, you won’t end up paralyzed in the middle of a move because most of your stuff is sitting in storage and can’t be retrieved.
