Are you remodeling your home?

Whether you’re hiring a professional or doing it yourself, it’s important to get it right. Otherwise even the smallest mistake could end up costing you a fortune to fix. But when you’re not an interior designer, it can be hard to know what to avoid.

6 Common Home Renovation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

That’s where we can help! Keep reading for these six common home renovation mistakes to avoid in your next project.

1. Having an Unrealistic Budget

Both indoor and outdoor renovations often cost more than you think. This is why it’s important to set a home renovation budget . Then on top of that, you should budget a further 20% as a safety net, to deal with any surprises along the way.

2. Not Vetting Contractors

Don’t rush choosing a home renovation service and do your research. You should interview 3-4 different contractors and reach out to a few of their past clients.

Be clear in what renovation work you want to be done and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A contractor with nothing to hide will be open and honest with you.

Don’t pick a contractor based on price alone, the cheapest isn’t always the best. Make sure they have the right licenses and insurances in place and check the quality of the work they do.

3. Not Prioritizing Function

When you plan your home renovation project, think about how you’ll live in the space. Consider door and window placements, as well as how traffic flows in and out of the room. The last thing you want is a beautiful space that you can’t use because you can’t walk through it.

4. Not Considering Safety

It’s a growing trend to have impressive staircases and balconies in our homes. Or to design homes with impressive architectural features.

Don’t pick these for looks only, you need to consider safety and structural integrity. Balustrade options, for example, should be high enough to keep the family safe.

5. Choosing Cheap Materials

The supplies for renovations should be high-quality and durable. You want them to last and not need replacing a few years down the line. If you’re on a budget, there are ways to save, but building materials are the place to start.

6. Having Unrealistic Expectations

When you remodel your home it will be noisy, messy, and inconvenient. And that’s the best-case scenario. Make sure you research before you begin any work so you know what to expect.

If you’re using a contractor, ask them what to expect before, during, and after the work. Spring or summer often appeals most for major remodeling work because of the weather.

Consider winter though, if you’re on a budget. Contractors won’t be so busy so there won’t be a premium charge on their services. This is where researching helps, as you know what compromises you can put up with.

Common Home Renovation Mistakes to Avoid

If you follow this guide you’ll avoid these common home renovation mistakes. Preparation is key, and it’s important to organize yourself and do your research.

Think about what you want and how it will impact your daily life. Pick contractors with care and don’t let form overtake function. Do this, and you’ll get a design that’s both beautiful and practical for your family.
