With the housing market in a slump, many people have turned to rent as their preferred form of housing.

When you rent a house or apartment, you obviously can’t make many physical changes in the way of painting or renovations.

Regardless of renter status, it’s essential to make your home feel like your space. With these tips, you can renovate your kitchen without violating your lease.

Improve Your Storage Space

One of the simplest ways to renovate your home in a renter-friendly way is to improve your storage space. Unfortunately, many rent situations don’t include much storage, especially in the kitchen area.

That leaves you scrambling for places to store food, dishes, and cookware. Rather than letting your items spill out into other rooms, incorporate some new storage solutions into your kitchen.

If your kitchen includes a pantry, adding some farmhouse storage and organization tools into the space will help make the most of the available room while keeping things stylish.

Even without a pantry, removable shelving and over-the-door hooks will help you maximize space in your home. No matter how little space you have around your home, organizers will help you fit your personal belongings in without things feeling cluttered.

Switch Out Your Lighting

Another renter-friendly way to renovate your home is by switching out your lighting. While your overhead lights are likely covered in your lease, there’s a good chance other forms of light aren’t mentioned.

One way you can bring new life to your home is by adding smart lighting. If you have a smart device such as Alexa or Google Home, you can connect it to smart bulbs and have voice-prompted lights throughout your home. Depending on the bulbs you buy, you could even have colored light in certain rooms.

Along with smart lights, you can add lamps around your home to make it feel more like your space. While overhead lights tend to feel cold and clinical, bedside lamps make things seem warmer and inviting.

If you don’t have the means to switch out your overhead lights, add a few laps around your home. These simple additions will make things homier and welcoming every time you walk through the doors.

Customize Your Floors

Finally, customizing your floors can be a renter-friendly renovation option for your home. While you can’t put entirely new flooring down, there are ways you can spice up the flooring solutions that were already installed in your home.

One such method is by installing removable tiles. This tile is specially designed to leave no trace once it’s removed from the floor, so you won’t be in danger of losing your deposit.

Another way you can liven up your flooring is with area rugs. While this seems overly simple, a stylish throw rug can bring a room’s decor together.

If you have the flooring you don’t like, putting a cute area rug on top will help conceal it while adding to the homey feeling of your place. No matter what your living situation is, customizing your flooring will help you feel more at home.

Overall, renovating doesn’t always mean violating your lease. With these solutions in mind, you can customize your home while staying in your landlord’s good graces.
