5 Spring Landscaping Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Spring is a great time to engage in outdoor DIY projects. Not only do home improvements appeal to prospective buyers from a resale perspective, but you will also get a great deal of enjoyment out of sprucing up your front yard over the course of the year.

In a nutshell, spring is the best season to lay the foundation for the rest of the year’s outdoor projects! Are you itching to get your hands dirty? Then keep reading for our top spring landscaping tips.

1. Evaluate Your Soil’s Texture

Understanding your soil’s texture helps you decide what plants and trees your yard can sustain. Soil textures range from sand to silt and clay. Clay soils are resistant to water, nutrients, and air penetration, while sandy soils hold even fewer nutrients.

To check your soil before yard work, take a handful of damp soil, rub it between your fingers, and try to form a ribbon. If the soil can form a tight ribbon of more than two inches, then you are dealing with clay soil. If the ribbon is thin and breaks when bent, you have sandy soils.

Knowing the texture of your soil helps you choose the right amendments and mulches you’ll need to amend the soil to have ideal lawn care.

2. Check Drainage

Make sure to check pathways, driveways, and gardens for any signs of unnecessary puddling or pooling of water. If you notice any signs of poor drainage, take steps to make sure the water has an adequate drainage system in place.

It’ll help to prevent soil erosion and avoid any fungal growth in the area due to standing water. Proper drainage should be a top priority in your spring landscaping tips!

3. Hang a Bee House

By hanging a bee house from a tree, the bees will be provided with a safe place to shelter and reproduce. Placing the bee house in sunlight will attract more bees as it provides a more comfortable environment.

Finally, bee houses should be checked regularly and cleaned out during the winter to keep the bee population healthy. Considering the important role bees have in the environment, hanging a bee house is an essential spring landscaping tip that every homeowner should know.

4. Fertilize Your Lawn

Choose a fertilizer that meets the specific needs of your lawn and the weather that makes up your lawn. Make sure to spread fertilizer evenly and not let too much collect in one area. Pay attention to any watering instructions that may come with your fertilizer.

Lastly, make sure any lawn clippings that have fallen into the grass are removed before fertilizing, as this will help ensure the fertilizer is more evenly distributed.

5. Do Some Planting

Plants can liven up any outdoor space and can be used to create stunning outdoor gardens and landscapes. Some important planting tips to consider include when to plant, which plants are compatible, spacing, and soil preparation.

Be sure to follow the care instructions for each plant that you introduce into your landscaping or get a professional like Green Life Property Services to help you with it.
