Summer is here, which means there is no doubt that you will want to spend a lot more time out in the garden than you would normally be getting a suntan.

If you don’t already have a garden shed – now might be the time you are looking to invest or your current one might just be a bit on the old side and you are just looking to trade up.

Either way, a shed is a focal point of your garden, so you want to make sure you choose the right one.

Things You Need to Think About Before Buying a Shed

There are so many out there these days, that we thought we would give you a list of some of the things that you need to know before making your purchase to help you make the correct decision for your needs.

The Size

What size is available in your garden to fit in a garden shed? Of course, this affects the size of the shed that you will purchase, so it’s always a good idea to take measurements of the available space. In terms of space, you may also want to think about what you are looking to store there.

If it’s just some garden tools for example, then you may not need something that’s very big – but if you are looking to use it as storage space in general, then you may want to look for a bigger space.

You will also need to think about how you are currently using your garden space. Do you need to move things out of the way to fit the shed in? Do you have any idea as to where it will be positioned? All of these are factors to consider when it comes to selecting the size of your shed.

You may also want to check the planning permission regulations. It could be absolutely fine to purchase the shed that you want without any issues, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry so do your research in your local area.

The Material You Want to Use

Before selecting your shed, you may also want to think of the material that you want for the shed. Wooden sheds seem to be the most popular and are considered to be the most durable simply because they have been around for such a long time.

They are also usually thought to be the most attractive option to look at as opposed to plastic or metal sheds.

If you are security conscious, you may want to consider a metal shed. They have locking systems that will ensure that the doors and the roofs can’t be opened easily.

For example, the metal Yardmaster sheds available at Shed Store have pad-lockable doors to deter thieves along with Weathersteel technology to ensure the items you’re storing are protected.

The likelihood is that it’s much more difficult for pests to access your shed if its metal – so if you do have anything that’s value – you can be safe in the knowledge it’s protected when this kind of material is used.

If you are on a budget, plastic sheds may be your preferred option as they are usually the cheapest. It’s perfect for any lightweight shed requirements but probably not as highly recommended in terms of durability.

What Kind of Access Do You Need to the Shed?

You also need to think about where you want to access your shed, and at which side you want the door to be positioned.

Again, you will need to take into account the surrounding space in your garden, and how much room you need. It could be that instead of a single door – you could need a double door depending on the space, and the storage requirements you have.

Single doors will allow for more space inside the shed, but you may find it difficult getting larger objects in there. If security is a big issue for you, then you may want to think about the security options.

Does it need an actual locking system? Are you comfortable with adding a padlock? You will find sheds that are specifically designed with security in mind – for example, they will have hinges that are hidden.

Have You Thought About Window Options?

If you plan on using your shed for more than just storage – you might want it to appear light and airy if you are going to be spending time in there.

You might want to think about if your garden is north or south facing to see where you want to position your windows, or you might want to make sure that there is a view out to your garden if you want to use it as more of a hobby space as opposed to just as storage.

You also will need to think about whether or not you want the windows to be open for ventilation on a hot day – and how you would like that to work. Security is something that comes up again in terms of windows.

If you are storing things of value in your shed, the better option may be for you to choose a shed with no windows. This means that your items wouldn’t be viewable to anyone in the outside world.

There are lots of options in terms of the types of windows that you can have installed in your shed. Styrene is usually the most popular as they are a safer glass alternative.

They are completely shatterproof and they are more environmentally friendly. Glass windows can look better, but they are more costly. These are generally used in summer houses as opposed to sheds.

Are you ready to purchase your shed? We have outlined a lot of different options here, and all of them are available at great online stores.

Enjoy your garden this summer!
