The splitter is a useful mechanical device that alleviates the process of splitting logs into smaller blocks. This equipment turns log cutting tasks into a safe, convenient, and efficient operation. Likewise, this may take off pressure from your back when cutting logs.

Splitters may vary due to specific parameters, such as their purpose and processing power. However, the notable difference among them is their operating principle. Moreover, there are three main types of powered splitters—wood, hydraulic, and kinetic splitter.

Moreover, bear in mind that log splitters are big, heavy, and potentially dangerous. Hence, you need to be adequately well-informed on how to use them properly to maximize their functionality and achieve great results.

To aid you, here are five top tips for safe operation when using powered log splitters:

1. Read the User Manual

Initially, you need to educate yourself on how to utilize the log splitter. Keep in mind that each powered log splitter is different. Thus, it’s crucial to read the manual before you start the operation.

Even if you’re already familiar with the usage of log splitters, you still need to know how the current one is intended to function. Take note that this may not be the same as what you’re used to.

You may think this is unnecessary, but before you start using the log splitter, you should remain updated on how to use it. Machines that can be purchased online, such as a log splitter from Tractor Supply, come with safety guidelines that teach new users how to operate them effectively.

2. Wear the Right Protective Gear

As you educate yourself with the machine’s manual, you may notice that the initial guideline centers on the essence of wearing protective gear. Such basics are:

  • Wear protective goggles to secure your eyes from potential injuries caused by flying wood debris.
  • Don’t wear baggy clothes or jewelry that can get caught up with the splitter.
  • Wear boots with steel toecaps to safeguard your feet from falling logs.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from splinters.

3. Annual Service and Maintenance

To ensure that your log splitter is at its peak condition, the entire machine should be checked at least annually for it to keep working effectively.

Prior to log splitting seasons, it’s crucial to assess if the spark plugs are in good working status and if the fuel is clean. Moreover, if you’ll be into the log splitting business for the entire year, ensure that gas engines are checked twice.

4. Lock the Wheels

Apart from observing the machine’s manual, it would be best to follow woodworking tips and techniques that would allow you to stay safe and boost your efficiency.

For example, powered log splitters can be immense to the extent that it can loosen the wheel and cause the machine to move. To prevent this from occurring, ensure that you block off the wheels with pieces of wood as you set up the log splitter.

5. Work Alone and Stay Alert

Another basic rule when handling the machine is that the operator who places and holds the log on the splitter should also be the same individual who controls it.

Only one individual should manage the log splitter for effective and safe operations. This is important to avoid serious injuries and/or damages.

Moreover, as you start performing the chore, children should distance themselves from the working area. They shouldn’t be permitted near the splitter, even under strict supervision.

Kids are naturally curious; hence, keep it a rigid rule to them not to stay in the work area or touch the machinery even if it’s no longer running. Having too many unnecessary people may add to the risks

Additionally, before you get too pumped to turn the logs into the potential door or wood deck board materials, remember to stay alert with the operation.

Maintain a minimum distance and always keep your hands and arms away from the ram of the log splitter while the machine is still running.
