1. Set Your Budget

You have to know how much you can afford before you even start your search. According to a recent survey published in The New York Times, 60% of colleges either overestimate or underestimate the cost of off-campus housing which causes students a lot of trouble.

You have to do your research and find out the average cost of housing outside the campus. When budgeting, consider all your sources of income and expected expenses (rent, security deposit, pet fees, utilities, food, parking, etc.).

2. Create a Short List of Your Needs

Before you start a search for an apartment or any other form of housing, you should consider your needs. Remember this is the same house you might use for several years and as such, you should identify a living space that suits your needs.

Consider your needs including free parking, a swimming pool, a study lounge, fitness center, food court, pet-friendly housing, affordability, commuter-friendly housing among other needs. You should never rush to pick an apartment based on aesthetics or the cost alone as this might turn out to be the wrong choice.

3. Tour Different Off-Campus Housing Options

Take a tour of different apartments or other student accommodation facilities around campus to get a feel of the options available. This will help you know the actual state of off-campus housing in terms of location, amenities available among other things.

During such tours, make sure you ask as many questions as possible and talk to people living there already.

4. Safety Comes First

Safety in college is a big deal, and when choosing a place to stay, this must be a priority. Don’t let the pieces guide you but instead, take a look at the location of your apartment, talk to your neighbors, look at the security installations around the property and check for any security complaints around the area.

5. Read the Lease Details

Don’t rush to sign the lease document before going through the fine print. Take the document with you and read through every item to understand the rent amount, payment method, the length of the lease, and any restrictions.

You should also consider taking renter’s insurance to protect your belongings, consider what you need in your living space before renting and consider sharing with a roommate to cut on the costs. Whatever you do, make sure you choose off-campus accommodation that suits your needs.
