  1. Clear Out the Clutter

The very first step in any organization undertaking, regardless of the area of your home, is to get rid of clutter. Now, depending on how chaotic your garage is, this could be anywhere from a day to a week-long task.

Don’t rush! Take your time, sort through everything thoroughly, and be very selective about what you choose to keep.

This is because, while it’s certainly possible to organize an extremely large number of items, do you really need both inflatable Santas that you found stuffed in the back of a box that you forgot was there? The goal here is space, cleanliness, and peace of mind.

  1. Add Cabinets

Once you’ve sold or given away all of the items you won’t be keeping, it’s time to focus on what’s left. One of the best ways to keep your garage looking tidy is to add cabinets.

Whether you line an entire wall with them or add two or three in a corner of the room, cabinets are an organization life-saver.

If you store any valuables in this area of your home that you aren’t able to keep out of view with cabinets, you may want to protect your garage with security cameras or frosted windows.

  1. Shelves and Bins Are Your Friends

While cabinets are a fantastic tool for storing your belongings, they won’t do you much good in the way of organizing if you haphazardly stuff everything you own into them. This is where shelves and bins come in.

Take inventory of everything you’re going to store and make note of both the number and sizes of bins you’ll need to store it. From the smallest items like nuts and bolts to larger things like pool floats and cleaning products, there’s a bin for everything.

And once you have it all in bins, label and organize them on your shelves and in your cabinets!

  1. Utilize Vertical Space

Beyond the use of shelves, there are many other ways to utilize the vertical space in your garage. This means using the walls to hang or sort things so they’re off the floor and out of your hair.

Use hooks for things like brooms, rakes, even ladders, to keep your equipment looking neat and organized. If you’re a woodworking fanatic, consider installing pegboard onto one or more of your walls to keep all of your tools and hardware.

  1. Don’t Forget the Ceiling

Last but not least, the ceiling of your garage is an invaluable, yet often overlooked, option for storage. Purchase hooks to hang bikes and kayaks out of the way, or hang a rack to hold bins that are accessed least often, such as those that hold holiday decor.

Just be cautious not to block the garage door pathway or the door into your home or yard. You don’t want to be trapped in the garage once you’ve hung your ceiling organizers!

Use These Tips to Have an Organized Garage

Well, there you have it! By using these tips, you’ll have the most organized garage in the neighborhood in no time!

Keep in mind that you probably have a bit of hard work in front of you. Depending on how much you own, the first step alone could take days. But once you’re finished, you’ll have a garage you can be proud of.

Utilize every space possible, including the walls and the ceiling, to keep as much as you can off the floor and out of the way. Store your belongings in bins and cabinets, making sure to label and organize everything so you’re not right back where you started.

And when you’re done with your garage and looking to move on to the next area of your home, check out our blog for more tips!
