What Are the Best Ways to Be a Good Tenant

Even when you find the best candidate, there’s no telling when things could take a turn. And no one would want to have a bad record, either. Being a good tenant takes more than just paying on time.

We’ll walk you through a landlord’s ideal tenant traits, so let’s start!

Know Your Lease

Many landlords want to accept a tenant who is responsible, but how do you show that before your lease starts? You read it well!

A lease binds you to your landlord, so it’s best to understand and remember it. Show that you value the agreement and will stick to it until the end.

Follow the Rules

Renting an apartment means you have to abide by your landlord’s rules. So before you do anything to the property, ask for their permission.

The importance of knowing your lease comes into the picture here too. If the lease says, you can’t, but your landlord gives the exception, have it in writing that they agreed. You should also make sure it has their signature.

Submit Written Requests

Try to practice sending all your maintenance requests to your landlord in writing.

It helps to know most landlords appreciate tenants who address maintenance issues ASAP. You can do some quick fixes yourself. In that case, you can work on them and notify them later.

Care for the Home

One of the best things to do when renting a home is to care for it like your own. Respect the space by keeping it clean and preventing damage. It could surprise you how big of a deal that is to many landlords.

Pay Early or On Time

Whether with a private landlord or a rental property company, you should always pay on time. No one wants a tenant who’s always overdue since that affects their services too.

Communicate with Honesty

Besides the property and contract terms, you should also value communication. If you have a concern, you can let your landlord know.

Do you need help with a screen door or fixing the lawn? Communicating these minor issues build a reliable and honest bond with your landlord.

Be a Good Neighbor

It won’t hurt to be a good neighbor if other people live in the apartment. You don’t have to talk to them all the time either. It’s enough to make less noise or be polite when addressing an issue.

Learn How to Be a Good Tenant

Renting an apartment will give you less freedom than owning a home. Still, the stay is only temporary, so you might as well be a good tenant while you’re around.

After all, your landlord is a person too. If you’re a good tenant, they will likely be the same towards you!
