In general, your home’s windows should last around 20 years. Regardless of how old you are, there will come a time when you’ll have to replace them.

You can replace them with the original type, but why go the boring route? By learning about the types of home windows available, you can switch things up and give your house a new look.

Read on for the different types of residential windows you can get.

Single or Double-Hung Windows

This is the most common type of home window. These involve 2 panes of glass, with 1 sitting on top of the other. You open them by sliding the panes.

The difference between single and double-hung is how they open. Single-hung windows can only open from the bottom, while double-hung windows can open from both halves.

Sliding Windows

These are similar to hung windows, but instead of the panes being on top of one another, they’re side by side. These work well to provide quick and easy ventilation. Plus, they’re one of the cheapest options available for home windows.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are also known as crank windows. As the name implies, they operate with a crank and they swing from a hinge. So when you open these windows, they swing outward, either to the side or up.

These are great if you want good airflow but still want a tight seal when the windows are closed.

Picture Windows

Don’t need a window to open up but want to let in light while getting a great view? Then picture windows are a good choice.

These are very cheap since they only have 1 pane of glass and don’t have any mechanical elements. By installing one of these, you can instantly brighten up a room with natural light!

Bay Windows

Bay windows serve a similar function to picture windows, but they’re reserved for the bay or a little nook in your house. And instead of 1 pane, you get multiple grouped together.

Bay windows are excellent if you’re doing a remodel, but will cost extra since you’ll need to create that nook. But the results are stunning and let in a lot of natural light as well.

Don’t Forget About the Glazing

The simplest, cheapest windows are single glazed. However, they don’t provide good insulation and are poor sound barriers.

If possible, you should go for triple-glazed windows. While these are much pricier, they’re worth their price because there’s better energy efficiency and extra noise reduction. Read more about them if you’re interested.

Choose from These Types of Home Windows

With so many types of home windows available, you’ll be able to find some that not only look good for your home but also insulate it well. So weigh up your choices and speak to a contractor to see what they can do for you!
