Whether you’re planning a home garden or a large landscape design, it is important to consider how it will look during each season of the year. Trees are the framework that shapes your garden, so deciding on the right type of tree for your area and aesthetic is important.

Keep reading to find out more about the two main types of trees.

Deciduous Trees

Deciduous trees get their name from the Latin root meaning “fall.” This is because the leaves of this type of tree tend to turn orange and fall off during the fall season.

This phenomenon happens because the leaves of deciduous trees contain a cell that basically acts like scissors, cutting the leaves off from the main part of the tree when the seasons change.

This allows the water to stay sealed in the tree and keeps the cold out. The fallen leaves also act as a blanket for the tree roots and other plants.

During the summer, deciduous trees give heavy shade to help cool the area underneath, but when the leaves fall, the sunlight can stream through the branches, heating up the area underneath.

Deciduous trees can also provide a bountiful harvest since fruit and nut trees tend to fall in this category. If you do end up planting fruit trees, you might want to invest in a sprayer for fruit trees.

Pests and diseases are some of the main causes when it comes to yield losses, so investing in a sprayer can help minimize those losses.

Coniferous Trees

Simply put, you can identify conifers as plants that have cones. Pine trees are a perfect example since we’ve all seen a pine cone before.

As coniferous trees grow they develop various adaptations in order to survive. The needles on a conifer tree may look mundane, but each needle is coated in a waxy coating called a cuticle. This waxy coating keeps moisture from leaking out of the tree during colder weather.

The needles of coniferous trees have also adapted to contain a mixture of chemicals like tannins and terpenes, which makes the needles less appealing to herbivores.

Conifers can also grow in nutrient-limited soils, so the trees have adapted to using their needles for a long time, ranging from two to five years or longer.

Coniferous trees can provide year-round privacy to block any unwanted views. If you place small coniferous trees together according to species, they’ll quickly form a green fence as they grow.

Coniferous trees also provide year-long protection from harsh winter breezes and refuge for birds during the winter.

Understanding the Different Types of Trees

Different types of trees have different uses and needs. When planting your trees, you need to check how tall they’ll become; you don’t want to obstruct any powerlines or structures.

Also, remember to use proper tree pruning techniques to ensure your trees reach their best potential as they mature!
