An orangery is a type of building that was originally used to house orange trees. These days, however, an orangery can be used for a variety of purposes, including as a home extension, a place to grow plants, or even as a wedding venue!

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of having an orangery and provide some tips on how to choose the right one for your needs.

What Exactly is an Orangery?

An orangery is a type of building historically used as a greenhouse or conservatory, although now they are more typically used as a type of extension to the rest of the house.

They are often found in the garden of home and first became popular during the 18th century for growing oranges and other fruit trees.

So what are the benefits of having an orangery? Well, first of all, they provide extra living space. An orangery can be used as a family room, home office, gym, or even a bedroom. They also help to increase the value of your home.

An orangery can also be used to grow plants year-round. This is especially beneficial if you don’t have enough sunlight to grow plants outside. Orangeries can also be used to protect plants from bad weather conditions.

If you’re thinking of adding an orangery to your home, be sure to consult with a professional. They will be able to help you choose the best design and materials for your needs.

So, What Are the Benefits of Having an Orangery?

There are plenty of benefits that come with having an orangery. For one, they provide a great way to extend your home and create additional living space. They also let in plenty of natural light, which can help to brighten up your home and make it feel more spacious.

Additionally, orangeries can be a great way to add value to your property. Whether you’re looking to sell soon or if this is something far off in the future, knowing that adding orangery won’t just improve your home space but will also increase how much it’s worth is definitely a comforting idea.

But how much can an orangery add to the value of your home?

It’s hard to say an exact amount as it will greatly depend on the overall condition and location of your property as well as the quality and build of your orangery.

However, according to industry experts, orangeries can add up to an extra 15% to the value of your home! Although a typical figure to expect would be in the 5-10% range.

Another benefit is that an orangery has a brick base with a glass roof and large windows. The brickwork of an orangery is usually faced with stone or stucco to give it extra strength and durability and is one of the major differences between the typical conservatory and an orangery (we’ll look at these differences in more detail shortly).

These glass roofs and large windows are the reason for the significant amount of natural light you can expect to receive in an orangery, which is one of the major attractions for adding one to your home.

What is the Difference Between Conservatory and Orangery?

To get an understanding of what an orangery is, it’s important we take a look at how exactly it’s different from its very popular cousin the conservatory.

Conservatory, orangery, and extension lines have become blurred as more homeowners choose to have glazed extensions installed. Conservatory rooms are technically extensions but orangeries are real conservatories.

The most significant distinction between conservatories and orangeries is the glass covering of the structure. A conservatory has low brick walls in an open-plan style with a glass roof, while an orangery has walls made from brick or stone and a glass roof.

So if you’re in a dilemma of orangery vs conservatory, the main difference to consider is that an orangery will have a stronger, more durable build and be better suited for use all year round.

How Much Does an Orangery Cost?

Now that you have a bit more insight into what an orangery is, some of the benefits, and why it’s different from the typical conservatory, I’m sure the next thing you are wondering is what is the cost of orangery?

There are a number of factors that go into the cost of an orangery, such as:

– The size of the orangery

– The style of the orangery

– The materials used

– The location

But on the whole, you can expect to pay anywhere between £5000 and £35000.

The most important factor in deciding the cost of your orangery will be the amount of double or triple glazing (windows and doors) that is required. Orangeries with more glazing will obviously be more expensive to build.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering adding an orangery to your home, hopefully, this article has helped give you a bit more insight into what they are, some of the benefits, and what the cost might be.

As with any big decision for your home, it’s important to do your research and consult with experts in order to ensure you make the best decision for yourself and your home.
