In early March, more than 20 people were killed after a tornado ripped through the Nashville area. It devastated the city by sending winds that whipped up to 165 miles per hour through it.

Most of the tornadoes that touch down in cities all across the U.S. aren’t anywhere near as bad as the one that impacted Nashville.

But there are more than 1,000 tornadoes that take place in the U.S. each year—and that number seems to be rising all the time.

What are Safe Rooms?

Safe rooms are Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved structures that are designed to be installed in homes. They’re a place where people can retreat during extreme weather conditions, including tornadoes and hurricanes.

Safe rooms are also commonly called Storm Shelters by those who have them installed in their homes. There are some instances in which they’re built underground, but they can also be installed within the confines of a home as well.

How Easy Is It to Install Them?

If you’re building a brand-new home from scratch, it’s very easy to have a safe room installed in it as part of your initial plans.

It’s a good idea to consider designing safe rooms for a home if you’re building it in a part of the country that’s known to have a lot of tornadoes or hurricanes.

You also have the option of adding a safe room to an existing home if you want. It used to be a big challenge to do this, but in this day and age, there are above-ground safe rooms that can be installed without a problem.

You will need to have a concrete slab for your above-ground storm shelter to sit on. But as long as you have that, it shouldn’t be a problem to have a safe room installed in your home.

What are the Benefits of Installing Them?

There are so many benefits that will come along with installing a safe room in your home. First and foremost, it’ll obviously provide you with protection during a tornado or hurricane.

But the benefits don’t stop there.

When you have a home with a safe room, it’ll also provide you with unprecedented peace of mind. You’ll love not having to worry about what you’re going to do if a bad storm comes through out of nowhere.

Additionally, safe rooms can increase the values of homes. You’ll likely see a spike in your home’s value when you take the time to have one installed in it.

These benefits make installing a safe room in your home seem like a no-brainer.

Building a Safe Room Might Be the Smartest Decision You Ever Make

Safe rooms have become very popular in homes throughout much of the Midwest. But they’re also starting to make themselves at home in houses in other parts of the country.

Consider having one installed in your home sometime soon if you live in an area that deals with bad weather on a regular basis. Deciding to install one could end up being a lifesaving decision.
