uPVC doors and windows are very common these days and one frequently asked question about them is, “will my uPVC windows need repainting?”

The answer to this question depends on you and your preference. While your uPVC windows can be repainted, the choice to repaint them is completely up to you. If you’re fine with the current paint colors of your uPVC windows, then there really is no need to repaint them.

Will My uPVC Windows Need Repainting?

This is because uPVC windows are designed to require very low maintenance and withstand harsh weather conditions without the need for repainting.

However, if your preference has changed and you want to repaint your uPVC windows, then you can. Bear in mind that unless you are an expert with a paintbrush, attempting to repaint your uPVC windows by yourself will not be an easy task, and you can easily end up making it worse.

This is why it is recommended that you enlist the services of professionals from companies like PBM Paints who have the proper experience and tools to give your windows a perfect finish.

Professional window spray painting is the best (most affordable, effective, and durable) technique homeowners employ to refresh their uPVC windows. It ensures a smoother and more professional-looking finish without any streaks and marks made by traditional brush painting.

Now that we have established that your uPVC windows do not necessarily need re-painting if you still want to repaint them, there are a few things you should bear in mind before you start.

Factors to Consider Before Repainting Your Upvc Windows

  • Painting new uPVC windows that are less than 12 months old is a bad idea. This is because the resins used in manufacturing them will continue to secrete up to one-year post-production, and this can ruin a paint job by preventing the paint from bonding to the window’s surface.
  • Because of its design, it is usually difficult for paint or varnish to adhere and bind to a uPVC surface. This can cause a paint job to look shabby, especially when it’s not done by a professional.
  • Another major factor to consider is the fact that uPVC windows tend to expand and contract through the seasons, and a poorly done paint job can develop cracks and peel with time.

Repainting Your Upvc Windows, Yourself

While a better option would be to hire a professional to do it, if you insist on doing it yourself, you can follow the following steps to get a good finish.

  • Apply a protective covering to the window glazing and around the exterior of your house. This way, the paint only gets on the uPVC window frames.
  • Thoroughly clean and degrease the window frames to aid better adhesion of the paint to the surface.
  • Dry completely after cleaning.
  • For a smooth and even finish, sand your windows gently to create an abrasive surface for the paint to adhere to.
  • Apply a layer of primer to the surface to help the paint settle onto the surface more.
  • Proceed to spray your window. The number of layers depends on the paint color you’ve chosen.
  • Allow the paint to dry and remove the protective covering.

Conclusion:

Since uPVC is designed for durability, low maintenance, and long-term use, your uPVC windows have no need for repainting. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t repaint them if you wish to.

Just ensure that you know what you are doing before attempting to repaint your uPVC windows yourself. For a more professional finish, you can get the services of qualified and experienced spray painters.
