5 Tips to Upgrade Your Backyard This Summer

It’s only natural that you’d want to spend more time reveling in the outdoors. From the cozy neighborhood park to the idyllic riverfront – you’re always on the lookout for places where you can cherish the warm sunshine.

But what you end up forgetting is that your home likely boasts an excellent outdoor space, that’s ideal for brunch and BBQ. If you haven’t guessed yet, it’s the backyard.

That’s right! Your backyard isn’t just a functional storage space for the things you buy on random shopping sprees. With the right decor and landscaping, you could transform the backyard into an oasis of fun and frolic.

But decorating your backyard isn’t just about covering it with artificial turf and throwing in a few plants. Routine maintenance combined with a dose of creativity and foresight can do wonders to revamp the backyard.

In this blog, we’ve outlined a few ideas to give your backyard an awesome makeover. Let’s take a look.

1. Get Rid of the Clutter

First things first – you need to understand that your backyard is meant for more than storage. If you’ve stuffed it with a pile of old gardening tools, carpentry equipment, paint cans, kids’ toys, and other knick-knacks, it’s time to start decluttering.

Start by going through all your stuff and figuring out what you need. Next, sell or donate any items that you no longer or are never going to use. Be practical and don’t hold on to objects because of emotional attachments.

Next, get a storage cabinet to organize all your belongings and neatly tuck them into separate shelves. You’ll be amazed by how this can instantly transform your backyard from a pile of odds and ends.

2. Prioritize Routine Maintenance

The icy winds and snowstorms of the previous months would’ve taken a toll on your backyard.

From the fencing and landscaping to accessories, such as bird feeders, BBQ grill, and swings – just about everything could be in need of repair. Ignoring routine maintenance isn’t just visually unappealing; it could also be a safety hazard.

Start by checking the fence for warping and chipping. Watch out for patches of mold and pests. Make sure you hire a professional contractor to repair or replace rotten sections of the fence. Also, it’s a good idea to apply a fresh coat of paint and replace any rusty hinges.

Next, take a closer look at other hardware, including the playhouse and grill, for any signs of wear and tear. Check the play area for rusty swing chains and weathered slides.

In most cases, repainting the hardware will keep it functional for the next season. If the grill grates appear too corroded, you should consider replacing them.

3. Build an Instagram-worthy Garden

What’s a backyard without a picture-perfect garden? It’s a treat for the eyes, great for your health, and provides the ideal backdrop for your Instagram posts.

If you’re new to the world of gardening, start by growing your own herbs, such as chives, parsley, basil, etc., alongside other low-maintenance plants, such as cactus, aloe vera, and succulents.

If you want to take things up a notch, try adding a splash of color with flowering plants. Lilies, carnations, hibiscus, and spider flowers are great for starting your summer garden. You could also try growing your own summer produce for all those BBQ parties with friends and family.

4. Get the Right Furniture

If you’re revamping the backyard, chances are you’re going to host quite a few gatherings there. Of course, you can’t expect your guests to sit on landscaping rocks and grass. That’s why it is a good idea to invest in elegant, durable, and multi-functional garden furniture.

From lounge chairs and benches to ottomans and coffee tables – you can get a wide variety of furniture to dress up your backyard. It’s wiser to choose garden furniture based on the climate in your area. Ideally, wrought iron or hard resin furniture is better suited to withstand the sun, wind, and rain.

5. Create a Pathway

Adding a gravel or pebble pathway to your backyard is one of the quickest ways of enhancing its visual appeal. Also, it could be a fun DIY project to keep your kids busy on weekends. You could create multiple paths that lead to important sections of the backyard, such as the dining area, playhouse, garden, etc.
