Here’s some terrific news: Between 2020 to 2027, the global interior design services market is expected to reach 4 billion while growing at a CAGR of 7.8%. And India? It’s supposed to lead the Asia-Pacific design market to reach a whopping $35.5 Billion by 2027.

in simple words: The interior design industry is thriving! The pandemic may have disrupted the ways we practice interior design, but the core is still intact – albeit digitally.

Far from the Maddening Crowds

…and into the four walls of our homes. That’s how 2020 has been like for everyone stuck at home and social distancing. But necessity and circumstance (aka the new normal) have transpired a slew of new design trends. Take, for instance, the “multifunctional” home.

Before the pandemic, homes served a singular purpose: it’s a space where you unwind and relax. Today, homes have become multi-hyphenate spaces where we work, sleep, study, exercise, even on holiday!

Remote work seems to have become a mainstay, seeing how the pandemic isn’t slowing down. We’re now looking at a future where home offices, multipurpose rooms, and “Zoom” rooms, if not spaces dedicated entirely for virtual calls and conferences, have become integral parts of residential spaces.

So, it’s no secret that the pandemic has dramatically changed how we interact with our built environments.

How Emerging Trends are Shaping the Future of Interior Design

In times of crisis like these, interior design will inevitably be set on the back burner. However, increasing interest in living environments that are flexible, clean, and responsive also means design professionals will get ample opportunity to exercise creativity in the near future.

Presently, the Following Trends Have been on the Rise:

  • Antibacterial materials able to withstand heavy-duty cleaning
  • Self-sufficient/multifunctional spaces
  • Separate clothing/shoe areas
  • At-home gym rooms
  • Home offices
  • A designated home tutoring space
  • Integration of gadgets or IoT devices into living spaces
  • Inclusion of “peaceful” colors and materials

Fortunately, these emerging trends also signal a welcome uptick in design services. In fact, they have already opened avenues for a variety of design services in residential, commercial, and other sectors.

On the other side of the crisis, when there’s a return to normal, many will want to refurbish interiors to ensure safety in hotels, commercial offices, restaurants, etc.

When it comes to that, interior design professionals will be their go-to choice. Who else will have the expertise to specify easy-to-clean yet safe materials that cater to healthier environments?

So, an increase in demand for interior design services is inevitable.

Career Paths, Both New & Old

We’re now looking at a slowly but surely evolving community of digitally savvy designers. Project videos, IGTV designer interviews, digital desk-sides for clients, and virtual press conferences have clearly become the go-to mediums for industry professionals to keep busy.

So, it’s only natural to expect design professionals to possess robust technical skills if they want to thrive in the post-pandemic design industry. Expertise in cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence and handling design software will go a long way.

While the various roles will remain the same, there will be some new additions to the desired skill set of a design professional. Fortunately, many institutes are already catching up.

You can acquire technical training from premier institutes through well-designed courses like interior design courses in Mumbai’s Pearl Academy.

In any case, empathetic client communication will be crucial to landing work opportunities.

Wrapping Up

While the pandemic has undoubtedly disrupted the way the industry functions, fortunately, the design community is enduring well.

Besides, a lot of innovation in the industry is already underway. There has been a welcome increase in the use of AI-powered designing software and tools. So, it’s only a matter of time before the industry is back on its feet and thriving once again!
