The Advantages and Disadvantages of Kitchen Re-Facing

Kitchen re-facing can be viewed in the same manner as changing wardrobes. Ascertain clothes become outdated, so do kitchen cabinets.

Re-facing can be described as a surface modification, implying that the original structure is retained then fitted with a new surface.

If your original item’s structure is still intact then it can be refaced. However, it is advisable to consult an expert since a handyman may not notice certain damages.

When Can You Do a Kitchen Reface?

You can consider doing a reface when for an economical choice. Demolishing and replacing structures is complicated, requires more products and procedures thus re-facing is a cheaper option.

When your schedule is very tight and you do not have much time, re-facing only needs an installation of surfaces alongside new drawer fronts and doors. The entire process only needs two or four days.

You can also do a Reface Kitchens Bathrooms when you like the original design but only want a little remodeling and when you are mindful of your carbon effects and you want to be more environmentally conscious.

Unlike doing a complete replacement, re-facing doesn’t entail discarding the whole unit thus you do not have to throw cabinet boxes into the junkyard unnecessarily.

Pros of Doing a Kitchen Reface

  • Economical Expenses

Cabinet refacing involves experts coming into your home, removing and replacing the front parts of cabinet doors and drawer fronts, and covering the naked face structures with an appropriate wood or plastic facade.

The total expense of doing a reface is way cheaper than doing a full cabinet replacement and it still leaves your walls intact.

  • Old Cabinets Sometimes are Better Than New Cabinets

Many years ago, most home cabinets were customized, made in a place with top-notch solid wood and superior construction.

The bodies are more durable and stronger than most of the new pre-constructed cabinets.  Those segmental units, mostly made from poor quality pressed wood material, tend to be appealing from the store but they can’t sustain pressure from daily use.

This can be an indication that your old cabinets are better structurally than what you can get presently. This, therefore, makes it ideal to reface the existing cabinets than to get new ones.

  • Lead

If your kitchen cabinets were painted long ago, the paint most probably contains lead. Sanding that paint and not doing it appropriately by a professional with appropriate training and tools can end up permeating toxic lead into your living space.

For this reason, you should enlist a competent re-facing contractor who is conversant with lead emission.

Cons of Re-Facing

  • Plastic

The majority of re-facing contractors use any of the three different types of material for your cabinets; real wood veneer, plastic laminates that resemble wood, or a rigid thermo foil.

The last two materials look like wood but getting closer reveals their true nature. Actual wood veneers are more appropriate but they are too expensive.

  • Lack of Upgrading Space

If the existing cabinets do not have sufficient space, you might want to reconsider a reface because cabinet boxes’ interior extensions, countertop space, and design remain unchanged when doing a reface.

Now that you are equipped with both the pros and cons of a Reface Kitchens Bathrooms you can make informed choices between refacing and replacing.
