After a few years of neglect, many homes show obvious, visible signs of wear and tear. The deterioration doesn’t happen overnight, of course. Neglected floor maintenance leads to problems that grow with each passing year.

5 Common Floor Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid for Homeowners

Problems like peeling, cracked, or buckled flooring can cost homeowners a small fortune to fix. Or worse, they can turn into a potent threat to your family’s safety.

Prevent disastrous outcomes by learning about the 5 common floor maintenance mistakes homeowners make. Fixing them means extending the life of your floors — and saving repair costs down the line.

1. Floor Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid: Not Vacuuming or Not Using Right Vacuum Attachments

Dust and dirt can build up on floors, making them difficult to clean and requiring more effort to maintain. Vacuuming and sweeping at least once a week is necessary to keep floors looking their best. This will prevent dirt and dust from becoming too ingrained.

Different surfaces have different designed attachments. Not using the right attachment can damage your floors.
For example, using a brush attachment on hardwood floors can scuff the finish, and using a beater bar attachment on carpet can damage the fibers.

2. Using Too Much Water

Too much water can damage many types of flooring, including hardwood, laminate, and vinyl. When mopping, use only enough water to dampen the mop head – not soaking wet.

When cleaning up spills, blot the area dry with a clean towel instead of scrubbing or using a lot of water. When cleaning kitchen floors, always use the least amount of water possible. Make sure that the floor is thoroughly dried afterward.

3. Not Using the Right Cleaning Solutions

The wrong cleaning solution can damage your floor and make it more difficult to clean in the future. Make sure to read the labels on your floor care products and use the recommended solutions for your floor type.

Use specific cleaners depending on the type of flooring.

4. Not Having a Regular Cleaning Schedule

Not cleaning on a regular basis can lead to more wear and tear on your floors, as well as voiding your warranty. This can also lead to a build-up of dirt, grime, and debris, which can then be difficult to remove.

To avoid these problems, be sure to establish and stick to a regular floor maintenance cleaning schedule. This will help keep them looking their best and help you avoid costly repairs down the road.

5. Not Protecting Your Floors from Furniture

One common living room floor maintenance mistake is not protecting their floors from furniture. This can lead to scratches, dents, and other damage to the floor.

Protect your floors from furniture. Use furniture pads, place rugs and mats under furniture, and rearrange furniture regularly. Also, avoid dragging furniture across your floors.

Consult flooring contractor for repair services due to unavoidable floor damages.

Avoid High Floor Maintenance Cost

As a homeowner, it is important to be aware of common floor maintenance mistakes to avoid costly repairs. You can avoid common floor maintenance mistakes and keep your floors looking their best for years to come.
