5 DIY Outdoor Wall Decor Ideas for Your Home

See below for several outdoor wall decor ideas that you can use to improve your home’s curb appeal with signature pieces and additions.

1. Rustic Door Hardware

Perhaps you’re looking to give your home a rustic look that resembles a barn or 1950’s farm. Maybe you’re obsessed with the look of Bilbo Baggin’s Hobbit hole (if you know you know) and want to replicate it.

Whatever the case might be, that all starts with your front door: the centerpiece for any home’s curb aesthetic. The front door is the nucleus for the rest of your home’s exterior look. If you can give it a rustic look, everything else around it will do the same.

Step one is to invest in a wooden door with your favorite type of wood, as well as your preference of stain (to help with the elements).

Once that’s complete, you can use rustic door hardware to give it the old-timey look that you want. Consider hardware additions such as:

  • Rustic Door Hinges (interior and exterior)
  • Rustic Iron Door Knockers
  • Rustic Door Handle
  • Rustic Clavos
  • Rustic Door Latch and Slide Bolts
  • Rustic Wood Construction Connectors
  • Rustic Mantel Straps (to put on either side of the door)
  • Rustic Speakeasy Grill and Door Set

As you can see, the options are virtually endless. You can add as many or as few as you’d like. As soon as you do, all of your guests will immediately understand the theme you’re going for.

2. Outdoor Signage

If you have a backyard pool, you probably see it all the time: guests of yours that cautiously peer over the side of your fence to try and be polite. Forget that!

Being a true party host is all about having a “come on in!” mentality. If you pride yourself on having guests over every weekend, then you need a way to point them to the life of the party.

Consider decorating your walls with awesome signage, similar to what you would find at a resort or pool. We highly suggest creating laser engraved metal signs that read something like “pool”, “outdoor party deck”, or “Jeff’s world-famous BBQ”.

For the metal, you should aim to use aluminum. Aluminum is flexible, durable, and holds up great to the elements. It won’t rust and doesn’t have any paint to chip off. In other words, it will hold its youthful appearance for many years to come.

The aluminum does oxidize, which will give it a rustic appearance that matches perfectly with your rustic door hardware that was mentioned above! See what we did, there?

3. Floral Decorations

Who doesn’t love a good floral decoration? They can springboard your home into one that gives off the appearance of energy efficiency and comfort. Who wouldn’t want to send that message out to the world?

You can use old windows and fuse them with flower planters to create something that can be hung from any wall outside of your home.

Start by running to the nearest craft store and grabbing a few window decorations that you can use. The size is completely up to you.

Next, run to your nearest home department store and pick up a few window planters and your preferred flowers to put in them. You can simply glue the two together or nail them together, then voila! you have a masterpiece.

These are also a great way to make use of old rustic windows that you or your loved ones no longer need.

4. American Flag Anything

First, this should be prefaced by saying that we don’t recommend that you put an actual fabric American Flag on your outdoor wall. It will start to lose its shape and color from the rain and UV rays alone.

Instead, we suggest decorating your outdoor walls with anything patriotic. For example, you could purchase a laser-engraved aluminum American Flag for your front porch.

You might also consider a patriotic wood board piece that will show off the red, white, and blue in a beautiful (and old-fashioned) way. It’s sure to be a big hit with all your guests.

5. Outdoor Clock

Lastly, we offer you a great way to tell time: an outdoor timepiece. If you’re looking for one more item to hang on your outdoor wall, this is the answer.

It’s especially great to put at those hangout spots, such as the outdoor wall closest to your pool or next to your outdoor kitchen. That way, you can enjoy company while making sure you don’t miss kick-off.

We recommend finding a timepiece that’s made of—you guessed it!—aluminum, so that it can hold up nicely against the elements.
