Dust mites are one of the major causes of allergies and are especially rough if you have asthma. The sneezing, wheezing, runny noses, and more come from these microscopic creatures that can live in nearly any humid environment or home.

But did you know that you could be sleeping with these pests? Without washing your sheets appropriately, dust mites may linger in your bedding.

Don’t Let the Dust Mites Bite: How Often Should You Wash Bedding?

So how to get rid of these nasty nocturnal bugs? All you have to do is wash your bedding! But you need to do it the right way.

Here are some tips on how to wash bedding.

  1. Frequency

It might surprise you to learn that you spend roughly one-third of your life sleeping. That means that a lot of debris ends up in your sheets, like skin cells, oils, moisture, sweat, and such. Does that bed still look cozy?

While it might not contribute to any major health changes, you don’t want to go too long between washes. You could end up with acne, dry skin, and also dust mites. Because of this, you’ll need to wash your sheets at least once a week.

However, you’re completely free to do it more frequently, especially if you sleep in the buff or don’t shower before bed.

  1. Detergent

When washing your sheets a normal detergent should do the trick. However, if you have a certain type of sheets that need special detergent or care, pay attention to the label and follow the direction to keep the best care of your sheets.

Silk, for example, is relaxing to sleep in but requires a bit more management when it comes to cleaning. The best silk pillowcase is great for people with allergies to dust mites because the fabric is hypoallergenic, so the washing is worth it.

  1. Water Temperature

Most care instructions will tell you to wash your sheets in cold water. But with all the skin, oil, and possible dust mites sheets collect every night, you’ll want to wash your sheets in the hottest water you can.

Doing so will scorch any dust mites or other lingering critters that might be just as comfy in your bed as you.

Make sure the water is 130 degrees Fahrenheit or higher if you’ve been battling an illness.

You get bonus points if your washing machine has a sanitizing setting. While it may take a bit longer, it’s worth it knowing your sheets are dust-mite free.

  1. Comforters and Blankets

While you likely don’t come in direct skin-to-skin contact with your comforter, that doesn’t mean you ignore it! Sheets are more important, but your comforter or other blankets needs care, too.

Commit to washing your comforter every few months or every season to keep dust mites out and in good condition.

Wash Bedding: No Dust Mites

It’s so important to wash bedding to avoid dust mites and keep allergies at bay. Taking the time to throw your sheets in the wash once a week will do wonders for having sweet dreams and a healthy body!
