Do you dream about redoing your basement? Have you got a young teenager who’s going to need their own room, and the only space is in your unfinished basement?

Clearing out and finishing your basement is a lot more cost-effective than building an addition. If you need more space in your home, start by looking downstairs.

Before you can reclaim space in your home, you need to clear it out. It’s amazing how much space you can free up. In the average home, about 10% of the total square footage is dedicated to storage; that includes cupboards, closets, pantries, cabinets, drawers, AV storage, pet stuff, and more. That’s largely just for the essentials.

Start adding tools, gadgets, holiday decorations, unused linens, old clothes, and you could find 20% or more of your house suddenly dedicated to storage.

You’re better off using that space to live in, especially if your family is growing or needs more room to breathe. It’s time to clean out the junk and get more out of your home.

To get started, you need some strategies to help you declutter. Here are a few great ways to start:

  1. Sell Stuff Online

Every family can use a bit of extra spending money. Why not take those unused (and even unopened) Christmas gifts and sell them online? Listing items on online classifieds is a much more reliable way to earn extra money than a garage sale today.

When you list things online, you get people who actually want them, not shoppers looking to scoop up bargains without much interest in them.

At the end of the day, though, your goal should be to get rid of the clutter first, so if a garage sale works, go for it.

  1. Use Freecycle

Another way to get rid of unwanted but perfectly good stuff is to put it on the Freecycle Network, an online network that helps you connect with people who could make better use of your unwanted stuff for free.

Reusing is the more environmentally-friendly alternative to recycling. Getting more use out of something is always preferable.

  1. Recycle

Not everything can be rehomed, so the best thing to do is recycle if that’s an option. You can take objects to a municipal recycling center yourself or hire a junk removal company like Capital Junk to do it for you.

  1. Erase Hard Drives

One of the more difficult things to get rid of, more and more of which is now accumulating in homes across the globe, is e-waste. Before you dispose of electronics, especially old computers, laptops, or smartphones, you need to make sure you erase the data on the hard drive.

You need to do more than just delete all the files. Take it into a professional or do some research online into software that will erase everything for you.

  1. Call a Junk Removal Company

Now that you’re left with nothing but junk, it’s time to call a junk removal company. Some companies like Capital Junk can save you a few of the above steps, including recycling and donating. They take everything and get rid of it responsibly, without selling any of it or profiting from donations.

It’s time to reclaim your living space from all that junk.
