How Do I Choose the Best Screwdrivers That Will Get the Job Done?

How would you know the best types of screwdrivers to keep around the house? Read on to learn how to choose the best screwdrivers to ensure that you always get the job done.

Choose the Right Size

If you’re unsure of what size screwdriver to choose, a good rule of thumb is to match the size of the screwdriver to the width of the screw’s head. You can measure the screws you will be working with or by referencing a chart that lists screw sizes and corresponding driver sizes.

Choose the Right Tip

The most common tip types are flathead and Phillips, but there are also Torx and hex tips. Flathead tips are generally used for slotted screws, while Phillips tips are for Phillips head screws.

Torx tips are common in automotive applications, while hex tips are more common in woodworking applications. The hexagon shape of the Hex tip makes it suitable for bolts like the lag bolt. Click here to know what is a lag bolt .

Choose the Right Length

If you’re dealing with larger screws that need more torque, then you’ll want a longer shaft. But, if you’re working in a tight space with smaller screws, then a shorter shaft will be better.

Consider the Screw’s Material

A screwdriver made of a hardened material such as steel is more appropriate when working with metal screws. But, if you are working with aluminum or brass screws, you will need an aluminum or brass screwdriver. This will prevent the screwdriver from slipping and damaging the screw.

Decide on the Handle Type

The handle type will determine the comfort level and the screw-torque capacity. There are three common handle types:

  • straight
  • offset
  • pistol grip.

Straight handles are the most common and versatile type of handles. Offset handles are good for accessing tight spaces and provide more torque than the straight handle.

Pistol grips are the most comfortable to handle and provide the most torque. To ensure that the screwdriver will last, check the handle, the shaft, and the tip. The material should be of a high quality that will not chip or break immediately.

Choose The Best Screwdrivers

It’s important to choose the right screwdriver for the job at hand. Otherwise, you run the risk of stripping the screws or harming the surfaces you’re working on. Choose the right size, tip, and length of the screwdriver.

Consider the screw’s material and the screwdriver’s handle type and durability. When you consider all these factors, you should be able to find the best screwdrivers for the job. Check out our blog if you want to read more about different types of tools!
