How Much Does It Cost to Hire an Interior Designer A Price Breakdown

This is where interior designers come in. They work with your vision while making the most out of your space, ensuring you’re satisfied with the end result.

But how much does it cost to hire an interior designer? Interior designers sound expensive, right? The interior design industry generates $10 billion annually.

With that figure, you may wonder if you can afford these services.

Here’s everything to know about the cost of an interior designer, including the fees involved.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire an Interior Designer?

Here’s the million-dollar question — what is the average interior designer cost? It depends.

Most people spend $5,500 for full design services, but that number can also vary between $2,000 – $12,000.

While interior designers have different fees, which we will cover next, there are different factors that affect the price. These include how many rooms you’re designing, furnishings, and more.

Interior Design Fees

When hiring an interior designer, understand that all interior designers have different fees that add to your total cost. Here’s how much you can expect to pay.

Consultation Fee

The first fee you’ll need to pay is the consultation fee. The consultation is the first meeting where the designer scales the project and discovers your wants and needs.

If the designer charges you, the fee is usually a flat fee. The fee can be anywhere between $50-$250.

However, some designers offer all-day consultations where they assist you with design choices and layouts. Afterward, you complete the project yourself. These consultations can cost anywhere between $600-$900.

Percentages

It’s uncommon to see a “Cost Plus” or a “Commission Fee” on your interior design receipt. This fee is a percentage that usually goes toward furnishings, travel, communication, and other work involved.

The best interior designers will disclose these fees; however, they may change over the scope of your project. Still, a transparent designer will inform you of any fees so you’re not left with a surprise bill.

How Interior Designers Charge for Their Services

All interior designers, such as this luxury design build company, charge for their services in different ways. These may include:

  • Cost per square foot
  • Hourly
  • Day rate
  • Per room
  • Flat rate

Hourly rates used to be the most common, but more experienced designers charge in different ways.

Cost per square foot is becoming more common because calculating the charges is easier for homeowners.

All homeowners have to do is calculate the square footage by the designer’s rates and come up with the total.

If you’re only designing one room, the designer may only charge you a flat rate for the room. Designers have specific prices for rooms, depending on your project and the room size.

Charging a flat rate is the least common method. That’s because design comes with different factors, all have their own fees.

When wondering how to choose an interior designer, take the way they charge into consideration.

Need More Interior Design Help?

If you’re looking to design your home in a specific way, you may need an interior designer. But how much does it cost to hire an interior designer? This is difficult to answer.

All interior designers charge differently, have various fees, and your project determines the price you’ll pay. It’s best to understand the scope of your project and create a budget for yourself.
