How Often Should You Replace Your Refrigerator Water Filter?

A refrigerator water filter ensures that the water and ice coming out of the dispenser is clean and fit for consumption. Consuming contaminated water is never good, so ensuring you have a filter that’s working properly is essential.

So how often should you change your refrigerator water filter? Keep reading to find out.

Why You Should Change Your Refrigerator Water Filter

Some people leave it too long to get a replacement refrigerator water filter and are unaware of the issues this might cause.

These water filters remove a range of contaminants from water such as lead, chlorine, and VOCs. All of these can be harmful to your health, so if they’re not being properly filtered out, anyone drinking the water could suffer negative health effects.

Water filters can help get rid of such contaminants, but only for a time. Even the best refrigerator water filter, such as the GE XWFE water filter, will need replacing after a while. It’s important to know when you should replace your water filter so that you can maintain a clean water supply.

When to Replace Your Refrigerator Water Filter

Most manufacturers recommend that you change the refrigerator water filter once every 6 months (as a minimum). With that in mind, there’s a range of factors that may make it more beneficial to replace or clean your refrigerator water filter more often.

If you live in an area with hard water, or where the water is generally of a lower quality, you might want to change your filter more often.

This may also be the case if you use your water dispenser or ice maker more often than most. More use means your filter will fill up faster, so you’ll need to change it sooner.

Signs You Need to Change Your Water Filter

It’s easy to forget when you last changed your refrigerator water filter. If this happens, there are various signs that you can look for which might indicate that your filter needs changing.

The most obvious is the smell/taste. If the water or ice coming from the dispenser smells or tastes off, that’s a pretty clear sign that the filter isn’t working properly. Don’t consume any until you’ve replaced the filter and the bad smell/taste has gone.

A bad filter can also result in a drop in pressure or interfere with the ice maker. If it’s making ice slower than usual, or not at all, this might be because the filter needs changing. Put a new one in and you’ll quickly be able to determine if that was the issue or not.

The Importance of Changing Your Refrigerator Water Filter

It can easily be forgotten but changing your refrigerator water filter is crucial. Not doing so could lead to serious health problems for you and your family.

You should replace it at least every six months, but in many cases, you might want to do so more frequently. For more home improvement articles, check out some of our other blog posts.
