As homeowners do their best to keep their property well-maintained, they often take plumbing for granted. It seems easy to resolve problems like slow drains and clogged toilets with DIY methods.

But you may end up with a disaster by failing to call a professional for the seemingly minor issues. Fixing them yourself can provide temporary respite but cause much bigger headaches down the line.

A thorough inspection at an early stage can be a savior as it helps to address concerns while they are manageable.

You can do your bit by watching out for such issues and calling a professional on time. Here are some tips to stay ahead of a plumbing disaster at your home.

Check Drainage

Start by checking drainage from sinks and tubs as it is an early sign of an impending disaster. It is easy to monitor how fast water drains, but you may end up overlooking it.

However, slow drainage is almost always a tell-tale sign of blockage. You may be dealing with a partial blockage in the line.

It could be a bigger issue as well. So, it is better to call a plumbing specialist sooner than later.

Inspect Pipes Frequently

Inspecting your plumbing pipes does not take long, but you can prevent expensive fixes with a little caution.

Check all exposed pipes in places such as behind toilet tanks and under sinks and look for signs of moisture.

Pay attention to sounds like rattling and banging when water is quickly shut off. These sounds indicate that the pipes are loose or weak and they may burst at some point.

Look for Basement Flooding

Basement flooding is a serious sign, so you must check it often. It may happen when groundwater or stormwater does not drain properly. It can seep into your basement and cause severe structural damage.

Never leave the repair to chance but call a plumber right away. They will assess the area for poor drainage, weeping tiles, clogged downspouts, and overgrown roots blocking or shifting pipes.

Sniff the Odor

An upcoming plumbing disaster does not always show up with visible signs. You may even smell it if conscious enough.

For example, a foul-smelling drain could indicate mold or rot in your pipes. Likewise, do not overlook a smelly toilet because it may be a sign of a major sewer issue.

Do not ignore foul odors in your home, no matter how small a problem they may seem.

Scrutinize your Water Bills

At times, plumbing disasters get hard to foresee because they have only subtle indications like rising water bills.

Check your monthly bills and raise a red flag if they seem to increase without a reason, such as an extra person in the house.

Call a professional to inspect your plumbing because water wastage is an environmental concern besides causing bigger bills. Moreover, there could be underlying problems that need to be resolved.

Plumbing disasters may happen when you do not expect them. They are often challenging to address and can cost a fortune. Make sure you stay a step ahead and save yourself from bigger trouble.
