Most roofs are made out of asphalt, which can last for 20 to 25 years under good conditions. The shingles that make up the roof are susceptible to heavy winds affecting the entire roof.

Rainwater can then easily penetrate through the roof, leading to cracks in the walls, damaging the ceiling and the wood in the attic. It is important to keep a regular maintenance schedule, and that could show you defects earlier before they worsen with time.

How to Tell if High Winds Damaged Your Roof

It is not easy to notice roof wind damage, especially if you haven’t witnessed it happening live. Depending on the nature of the color of the roof, you could have a tough time seeing any defects to the roof. Be on the lookout to see if your roof requires attention from a professional roofer. This article will describe the signs and symptoms of a roof damaged by high winds.

Missing Shingles

When heavy winds hit the roof, the shingles could break away, making it easy for water to pass through. When you notice that some shingles are missing or broken, you should call your roofer right away to replace this before it is too late.

Water Leaks

Wind damage to the roof of the house can lead to the removal of some shingles, creating space for water to come into the house. This can be seen on the walls, ceiling space, and attic and can affect the look of your home over time.

When the roof is overwhelmed with dirt, it loses its stability, making it easy for water to come in. Using low-quality shingles for your home could result in a costly repair project a few years after installing your roof.

Granule Loss

When shingles tear up and fail to hold together, they lose granules that could be carried away by heavy wind. This granule can be carried off by rainwater in the drainage, causing clogging in your home’s system.

As a homeowner, ensuring your home is protected from this heavy rain is your greatest task, especially if you live in a wind-struck environment. Dedicate days in a week or a month of thorough inspections around your house to notice.

If they find their way inside your house, they could land into your HVAC system leading to contamination of your living area. Keeping meshes on your vents can prevent these granules from penetrating your living area.

Clogged Gutters and Downspouts

As the roof begins to deteriorate, its shingles become loose, leading to a loss of granules. In other cases, the shingles could tear away from the roof, finding their way into the gutters or downspout. These objects block the passage of water in the gutters, which could affect your roof.

Areas that experience heavy snow could be at the risk of ice dams that could lead to water damage to your house especially when not handled early.

Mold in the Attic

The attic is the uppermost room of your home, can experience the growth of mold, and mildew from the existence of moisture in the attic. This moisture could result from a damaged roof that allows air and water to penetrate the attic.

This could increase the degradation of wood in your attic, affecting your house. This is a good indication to call professionals to help fill in these spaces before they increase in magnitude.

Lifting Shingles During Winds

If you witness your shingles lifting when the wind blows, then it should indicate that you might have a problem. Shingles should remain intact when the wind blows to protect your whole roof from being carried away by the wind.

This lifting can make a shingle lose its granules that can find their way into any surface. Getting your roofer’s attention can help address the problem early before it affects the rest of the roof, which can be expensive.

Damaged Flashing Around the Chimney

If your house has a fireplace and chimney, then wind could easily damage its flashing. Flashing is the joining between the chimney and the roof made of cement, making it durable and easily repaired. High winds can crack the flashing, thereby damaging your chimney and roof.

Debris On the Roof

High winds will tend to carry anything around, especially in open spaces that don’t have enough trees. This debris can include tree branches, stones, clothes, toys, among others that can find their way onto the roof damaging the shingles.

Maintain a regular inspection date for your roof to check for any defects in the roof. The earlier you notice a problem, the more likely it is going to be resolved. Use a roofer that can be reliable to maintain your roof and enable it to serve you for ages to come.
