  1. Set a Visual Goal

Get a few cardboard boxes. If possible, limit yourself to two or three. All your clothes should fit into these boxes.

Do the same thing for items overwhelming your shelves and drawers. At the end of your decluttering session, make sure you don’t go over the limit. Also, make it a point that you can close and seal those boxes too.

What happens if you have more things to keep? What if they don’t fit the boxes? It’s time to move to the next step.

  1. The KonMari Method

If you want to learn how to get rid of clutter for good, you can’t go wrong with the KonMari method. Popularized by Marie Kondo in her show, this method is all about holding onto an item and determining if it sparks joy. If it doesn’t, regardless of where it came from or how sentimental it seems, you have to let it go.

  1. Does It Work?

Still got a few items over the limit? Still holding to more items than your boxes can contain?

Your next step is to go through the items and determine which ones still work. If they don’t function, don’t keep it. Put those items in a separate pile — you’ll get back to those in a bit.

Also, don’t make the excuse that you can fix it. If you could fix it, you should have done so a long time ago. The fact that you didn’t work on it indicates it’s not as sentimental as it seems.

  1. Do You Use It?

To further narrow down your clutter, take all the things that still work and then remove all the ones you haven’t used in a month or longer. This counts for clothes too.

Sure, some of those clothes might seem nice but you don’t use them so why keep them? They’re only cluttering your home!

  1. Take Photos

For items you still like but you know they have to go, take a picture of them. Use a digital camera so you can easily upload the photos to a cloud storage service. Now you can keep the memories but let go of the item.

  1. Can Someone Else Use It?

Let’s go back to the items you had to discard. For all the items that still work but have to go, donate them to someone else or an organization. You should also donate some of the items that they can still repair.

Now take all the items, clothes, and other belongings that don’t work anymore. Give those to a recycling shop or junk shop. They can still put those items to good use instead of tossing them into a dumpsite.

  1. Call for Help

If you’re decluttering your home and you discover it’s time to get rid of big appliances, don’t feel afraid to call for help. This also counts for decluttering the home of someone else, like a relative who recently passed away. You can click here to learn more about professional decluttering services.
