As much as your HVAC systems work to keep you comfortable during the year, they need a bit of help when the weather gets cold.

When temperatures dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, HVAC systems work much harder to heat and cool your home. This puts more stress on your HVAC system and leads to breakdowns much faster.

HVAC Maintenance Tips for Winter

To prevent costly system breakdowns, here are a few winter HVAC maintenance tips you should know about. In this article, we will walk you through how to care for your system when the temperatures start to dip.

Schedule an Annual Tune-up

One of the best ways to keep your HVAC system running smoothly and efficiently is to schedule an annual tune-up. This should include a thorough inspection of all components, a cleaning of the unit, and any necessary adjustments or repairs.

Be sure to ask your technician to clean all of the components of your system, including the filters, coils, and blower. It is important to get a qualified HVAC repair in this area to help prolong the life of your system.

Make sure that your technician checks the refrigerant level of your system. Low refrigerant can negatively impact the performance of your system and can lead to costly repairs.

Ask your technician to perform a safety check of your system. This should include checking for carbon monoxide leaks and inspecting all electrical components.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

One of the simplest and most important things you can do is change your air filter regularly. A dirty air filter can cause your system to work harder and less efficiently, leading to higher energy bills and potential repair issues.

Check your air filter monthly during the winter and change it as needed. A clean filter will help your system run more efficiently and reduce wear and tear.

Keep Your Thermostat Set to a Consistent Temperature

As the weather starts to cool down, you’ll want to make sure your HVAC system is running efficiently. One easy way to do this is to keep your thermostat set to a consistent temperature. This will help prevent your system from working overtime to heat or cool your home.

In the winter, set your thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you are home and awake. Then lower it to 55 degrees Fahrenheit when you are asleep or away from home. When you are gone for extended periods of time, you can raise the temperature to save energy.

If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it to automatically lower the temperature at night and when you are away from home. By keeping the temperature consistent, you will save energy and extend the life of your HVAC system.

HVAC Maintenance Essentials

If you want to avoid high heating bills and maintain a comfortable temperature in your home this winter, follow these HVAC maintenance tips. Schedule a professional tune-up for your furnace or heat pump and make sure to change your air filter regularly.

Keep your thermostat set to a consistent temperature and clean any debris from your vents and baseboards. By taking these HVAC tips, you can save money and keep your home cozy all winter long.
