Classical and traditional styles were popular in interior design at one time. Tastes changed, and the rustic look was everywhere one turned. Over the years, Victorian, Japanese, and Scandinavian styles have dominated the interior decor field. Today, however, more people are embracing modernism.

People want cutting-edge designs when choosing chic contemporary furniture for the home and other items. They want the furnishings to reflect their style while improving the residence’s functionality, and current trends reflect this.

The Modern Home

Functionality is the theme in modern homes today. Homeowners choose the floor plan, color scheme, furnishings, and home decor with this goal in mind. They want each element in the house to have a purpose and a place so they don’t have to put effort into doing what they want. The home design makes every activity effortless.

Updating the home this way doesn’t mean everything must be thrown out and the person must start over. Any interior design style can be updated for a modern look. Bring in contemporary furnishings, paint the walls in neutral colors, and find other ways to improve the home’s functionality while keeping elements of different styles present. The following tips can help you incorporate modern interior design style into the existing home decor.

Select a Theme

A modern design goes beyond the contemporary theme and effortlessly coexists with other design trends. Choose a theme before moving forward with the process. If a modern theme with current design trends is desired, move forward with that goal.

Modern Floor Plans

Many homes today feature open floor plans to maximize the living space. Each owner can use this space in a way they feel comfortable. For example, they can allow two rooms to meld into one by changing the furniture arrangement or establishing distinct areas for different purposes, such as choosing a living room design that encourages quiet conversation. Room dividers and screens allow the areas to be used for other purposes at various times.

Use Neutral Colors for the Backdrop

Neutral colors infuse a home with a sense of functionality. Choose neutral colors for the walls and furnishings, but don’t assume this means the house must be lacking in color. Add pops of color to dress things up, or invest in geometric prints and patterns. Texture can liven up a space while keeping a modern feel. A few plants, a fish tank, or other unique elements may also be used to brighten the room.

Home Decor

Abstract artwork or pieces featuring clean brushwork, such as Kandinsky’s pieces, benefit modern homes greatly. Textures are also beneficial when adding some flair to an otherwise functional space. Incorporate some color or choose meaningful quotes and display them throughout the home. When selecting trendy items to dress up a space, avoid any with tassels or embroidery. Select glass or crystal and consider scattering a few resin pieces throughout. Photo dreams with clean edges, lava lamps, or jars filled with colorful items are also good additions to a modern home.

Modern Flooring

Most modern floors have homes made of tile or marble. Clean lines and smooth surfaces are essential, as the flooring should not be hazardous to those who enter the house. Again, neutral colors are preferred and should blend with the home’s color palette. Hardwood flooring is another option if the surface is smooth. However, a homeowner might choose vinyl flooring for an edgy look that catches the eye.

Geometric Patterns

Modern homes feature straight lines and clean edges. Textured surfaces are kept to a minimum, and many believe this should extend to textiles and other home decor items. There is no reason to limit oneself this way. Add geometric patterns throughout the home for a fresh, modern look. They add a touch of glamour wherever they are used.

Modern Furnishings

Modern furnishings have clean lines and clearly defined edges. They offer functionality to simplify everyday tasks, and pieces that serve dual purposes often fall into this category. Most modern furnishings are monochromatic or a neutral shade. Minimalistic design patterns are the norm, although recessed panels might be added for a touch of style. Manufacturers use noiseless technology when creating these pieces, equipping them with silent-hinged, muted gliding drawers and more.

Lighting Options

Simplistic designs make ideal lighting fixtures in modern homes. Natural light remains the preferred option of many modern homeowners. Circular sconces and structured lights with straight lines blend well into the overall design scheme, or pendant lights can be chosen for overhead lighting. Avoid extremely ornate chandeliers. Opt for a simple, minimalistic design for a well-coordinated look, and add some accent lighting to highlight certain decor elements, such as a favorite piece of artwork.

Focal Points

Focal points within a home give people something to focus on. One person might choose to make a homemade item the focal point. Another individual might select exquisite furnishings and highlight them. Each person must decide what they feel deserves extra attention within the home.

Throw in a Curve Ball

Most people associate modern design with straight lines and clean edges. Curves are perfectly acceptable in modern design, however. Choose a modern curved canopy bed made from metal, for example, and combine it with a curved reading chair in a neutral color. These pieces will add a modern touch to the room, making it warm and inviting.

Many people dread renovating their homes. They are excited when they start this process because they believe they can start with a clean palette and design a room any way they want. However, they quickly realize doing so means they must get rid of their favorite pieces. No law says they must.

The above tips can help incorporate modern design elements into an existing home decor scheme.  Increased functionality is the goal of modern design. Find ways to optimize the space without giving up cozy comforts. It is possible to do so. If finding a way to keep some aspects in one room of the home while achieving the desired look and functionality is difficult, consider moving those items to other locations in the house. With creative problem solving, any person can have a modern home they love while surrounded by items they cherish.
