Your carpets have seen better days. It’s covered in coffee stains from spilled mugs and there’s a small section in the corner that your dog chewed up. It might be time to remove it and start over.

How much does it cost to replace flooring though? Would it be cheaper to repair the damaged sections and move on with your life? It depends on how bad the problem sections are and what kind of floor material you’re working with.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace Flooring?

The average price for flooring is about ten bucks per square foot. Keep in mind that this cost can fluctuate depending on the material that you’re working with.

The cost to replace hardwood floors is going to be a bit higher than putting down a new carpet, for example. Another thing that will affect the price is the contractor you hire. Labor fees can vary from company to company.

Can You Repair Instead of Replace?

Sometimes you don’t have to take on an entire home remodeling  project in order to enjoy brand new floors. If your hardwood flooring only has a few scuff marks there’s no reason to replace them. You can buy a floor kit or hire a contractor and fix the problem.

If a piece of your laminate flooring has cracked you can fix that up in a matter of hours. In fact, it’s made specifically so repairs are possible.

One of the only flooring types that might give you some trouble is the carpet. Most of the time even if a small section is damaged or stained, you’ll have to tear up the entire floor to fix the problem. A professional carpet company might be able to install a patch that will hide the damage but that’s a temporary fix.

When you’re weighing the pros and cons of replacement vs repair another thing you have to think about is the floor’s age. Hardwood can last for over 100 years if you take care of it but the most life you can get out of carpets is 10. If your flooring is past its expiration date and is showing signs of issues, just go ahead and replace it.

Will it Increase Your Home Value?

Certain flooring options will increase your home value more than others. Some buyers will even be willing to pay extra if it means they can have hardwood floors.

If the floors are highly damaged though, you won’t see many hits on the realtor websites. So, if you’re selling, it might be a good idea to replace your floors before putting it on the market.

Is New Flooring Worth What You’ll Pay for it?

Depending on the size of the job and the contractor you call, the cost to replace flooring can be a bit expensive. If there’s only a small section of your floor that’s damaged the price tag might not be worth it. You could make repairs and call it a day instead.
