There’s nothing wrong with being a do-it-yourselfer, but there are certain jobs that are best left to experienced professionals.

While it’s true that there are tutorials for just about everything these days, that’s not necessarily a good thing – as many homeowners trick themselves into believing they can sprout handyman skills overnight with a basic toolkit, a YouTube video, and some misguided ambition.

5 Kinds of Kitchen Repairs that Should Be Left to Professionals

That being said, here are five kinds of commercial kitchen exhaust system that you should probably leave to the professionals:

  1. Broken Appliances

How hard can fixing an appliance be, right? Wrong. It might seem like nothing more than basic nuts and bolts, but properly diagnosing and repairing a broken appliance is often more challenging than expected.

Many homeowners make the mistake of taking the DIY route in this regard, only to wind up replacing the appliance or dumping money into unnecessary parts due to an inaccurate initial diagnosis – not to mention voiding any warranty terms.

It’s always best to obtain repairs from a provider that your appliance manufacturer or dealer endorses. For example, if you need an Electrolux repaired then you should hire a repair company that specialises in this brand (find out more about Electrolux repairs here).

  1. Roof Leaks

Fixing a roof leak might seem simple, but the hassle and cost of doing it wrong simply aren’t worth the risk. Roof repairs can be somewhat costly, but putting off this kind of repair can have disastrous consequences, leading to further deterioration of the damaged roof area.

Of course, there’s also the safety concern of an untrained amateur do-it-yourselfer climbing up a ladder and wandering about their rooftop. Applying a temporary patch to the interior using a quick fix like caulk could backfire by causing moisture to accumulate, as most leaks need to be properly fixed from the exterior.

  1. Exhaust Fans and Ducts

Any fans and ducts that exhaust air from the stovetop area should be installed and repaired by professionals. Improperly installing kitchen exhaust systems can lead to a greater risk of fire due to inadequate heat and air removal. If such a disaster were to happen and you performed the work yourself, your insurance might not cover the cost of repairs.

  1. Plumbing Issues

While unclogging a sink or installing water lines on a refrigerator can sometimes be routine jobs, there are certain plumbing problems that are better left to a plumber. If typical DIY plumbing solutions like using a plunger and drain cleaner don’t work, go ahead and schedule a diagnostic appointment with a local plumber.

You might be tempted to try your hand at using a mechanical auger to resolve the issue, but be careful as causing damage to pipes could be an expensive mistake.

  1. Electrical Work

Any jobs that involve routing wires or other electrical work should be left to an electrician or other qualified professional. Improperly installing or repairing electrical components can create a risk for fire and the cost of repairing the damage from an electrical fire would have you wishing that you hired someone else to do it the first time around.

Safety and Quality are Worth Paying For

Ultimately, you should never perform any kind of repair or renovation that you’re not 100% confident in your ability to complete safely. Although eliminating the cost of labour might initially save you some money, in the long run, the cost of having the work redone will be even greater than if you had outsourced the work, to begin with.

In conclusion, when it comes to DIY projects, homeowners should focus on smaller challenges with fewer liabilities.
