Trying to keep up with style trends, particularly if you’re in a larger city, can be tough. It’s made even harder when you’re living in a cramped apartment and you’ve got a tight budget.

Because of this, you might think there’s just no way for you to properly light and decorate your space while still having everything look amazing.

4 Lighting & Decorating Tips for Your Small Apartment

Well, the good news is that you could not be more wrong! Fortunately, you can have everything looking great in your small apartment without making sacrifices or having it cost you a fortune.

It will take a little more work and browsing in the initial stages, but once you’re done and you’ve got your apartment looking wonderful, it will all be worth it.

1. Use Lighting Which is Functional and Easily Adaptable

Look for lighting options that will serve multiple purposes without getting in the way. Pendant lights can be terrific, particularly if they have an adjustable hanging length.

Table lamps and floor lamps are a great option too, as they’ll allow you to place the illumination exactly where it’s needed, then quickly move it when the time comes.

Lighting stores like Stylish Direct will have plenty of options in these categories for you to browse.

Being sure to maintain adequate lighting levels throughout your apartment will keep you more efficient and you’ll also likely be happier.

A properly lit room will also help to make things seem more open and spacious, which obviously goes a long way when you’re spending all day in an apartment with limited space.

2. Keep a Clear Separation Between Any Work And Living Areas

So many of us are working from home these days, and for many of us it’s looking like that will be a permanent change moving forward.

Obviously, this has made a home office or at least an area set aside for working a necessity.

Having work and home combined like this could lead to trouble, however, as it can feel like you’re never really leaving work.

Keep your productivity and sanity high by making sure that there’s as much separation as reasonably possible between your workspace and home space.

If you don’t have a dedicated room for working, clear out a space in your apartment which you can consider your office. Separate this area from the rest of your home using a thin room divider.

Ensuring that you have one area dedicated to working, while the rest of your apartment is dedicated to living and relaxing, will go a long way towards improving your home and work-life balance, and helping you to shut off when you’re done working for the day.

3. Choose Furniture Which Can Serve Multiple Purposes

When space is at a premium, you need to get as much as you can out of every single little object in your apartment.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is by filling your place with furniture which serves more than one function.

Find an office chair that looks nice and it can double as extra seating for when you have guests.

A hollow ottoman will look nice and allow you to put your feet up while also allowing you to keep things hidden away.

Dining tables with leaf extensions will let you take advantage of their full size only when you need it, and stay small and out of the way at all other times.

4. Think Vertical When Thinking Storage

While the ottoman we mentioned will be helpful, it’s certainly not going to cover all your storage needs so for that let’s look to going vertical.

Options that take up space by being taller, not wider, will give you just as much storage capacity without taking up a huge footprint in your apartment’s limited space.

If you’ve got the ability to make large changes, something like a Murphy bed could even be a fantastic option.

You’ll keep your bed stowed and out of the way when not in use, allowing you to have a massive amount of more usable space during the day.

Just think of all you could get done with that extra space available each and every day!

Putting these simple but highly effective changes into place in your small apartment will make a tremendous amount of difference in both your happiness and productivity level while you’re living and working from home.

Your space will feel significantly larger, and you’ll probably find that it’s also much more functional. Enjoy!
