  1. Failing to Deep Clean a Deck on a Regular Basis

If you have a deck, you should get into the habit of sweeping it every so often so that debris isn’t able to build up on it.

You’ll be asking for trouble if you constantly have leaves, sticks, dirt, and more on your deck.

But you should also do more than just sweep your deck to keep it clean. At least once every year, you should deep clean it and then seal it to protect it from the elements.

It’ll inject some life back into your deck and make it last longer overall.

  1. Using the Wrong Tools to Deep Clean a Deck

While it’s important to deep clean a deck, you shouldn’t use the wrong deck maintenance tools. A lot of people pull out a heavy-duty pressure washer to deep clean their decks and end up doing more harm than good.

You can use a pressure washer to clean a deck if you’d like, but it should be set to an appropriate setting so that it doesn’t damage your deck.

You should also invest in the right kind of cleaning products to get your deck clean without harming it.

  1. Ignoring Obvious Issues With a Deck

In addition to doing the proper deck cleaning, it’s also important for you to keep a close eye out for any deck repairs that might need to be done.

From loose deck boards to nails popping up all over the place, there are a whole host of things that might need to be repaired when it comes to decks.

Inspect your deck about once a month to see if there is anything that needs to be fixed. By checking deck gaps and other aspects of your deck, you can keep your deck in great shape.

  1. Attempting to DIY Deck Repairs

If your deck needs to be repaired, you might be tempted to tackle repairs on your own. This is one of the biggest mistakes with deck maintenance that you can make if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Replacing a deck board or multiple deck boards might seem like a simple enough task. But if you don’t have any experience working on decks, you could make the situation worse. Leave deck repairs to the professionals.

  1. Trying to Squeeze Too Much Life Out of a Deck

Decks are designed to last for a long time. There are some that will stick around for more than 30 or 40 years when you maintain them properly.

But at some point, all decks will need to be replaced. You shouldn’t try to squeeze too much life out of yours and put you and your family at risk.

Instead, bring a renovation company on board to build you a new deck. They can make sure it looks nicer than your old one and talk to you about how to maintain it so that you can put a deck maintenance budget into place.

Don’t Make Any of These Mistakes With Deck Maintenance

Having a deck connected to your home is great. It provides you and your family with room to stretch out.

But it’ll be essential for you to maintain your deck over time. Avoid the five mistakes with deck maintenance listed here to keep your deck in great condition for many years to come.
