A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for a room. You could use a bright shade to transform the room into a sunny oasis or enhance an already existing color scheme by basing it on a favorite accent piece. It all comes down to the colors you choose. Of course, that’s easier said than done as settling on paint colors is often quite the challenge.

Below, we’ll go over a few pointers on choosing colors so that your next painting decision is easier to make.

Research Color Theory

First and foremost, it’s constructive to refer to paint color theory for direction. Doing so helps shed light on when to use warm or cool tones, light or dark shades, and so on. There are even color theory-based tools that can be very effective in guiding your search.

For instance, an inexpensive color wheel tool is useful in generating ideas. Find the darkest shade that appeals to you and work your way up on its strip. After some time, these lighter tints and shades become steadily more appealing and possibly inspiring.

Another method of utilizing this tool is to create a color scheme using “anchor items” and coordinating them with the colors on the strip.

These objects could be a favorite painting, an antique sofa, or even a pair of vibrant throw pillows. Once you have the items picked out, match them with corresponding or complementary colors on the wheel strips.

This should give you numerous colors to choose from as each strip typically contains five to six paint colors. Then, pick out one color for the walls, two for fabrics and furnishings, and a fourth as an accent color.

You could take this a step further by using the same strip of colors for adjacent rooms. Simply select another color or tone your favorite one with a little gray coloring to achieve an attractive undertone. Following this sequence connects the spaces, ultimately giving the house more flow.

Reach Out to the Experts

Color consultants and professional painters can also be very helpful in providing ideas from new perspectives, selecting on-trend colors, or even designing a custom color palette specifically for your home.

Whether you choose to meet with someone trained in interior design or a trusted home improvement company offering residential painting services , having the experts on your side could make a world of difference in the final results.

Before scheduling a meeting, however, it’s advised to have a clear idea in mind. To aid in this endeavor, consider using interior design websites or similar resources to generate concepts or find inspiration.

You may also want to study the natural lighting of the room or other elements of the space which might weigh into the decision. That way, you could go into the meeting prepared and well on your way to finding the perfect paint color.

These are just some approaches to consider as you take on this tricky task. If you want to learn more about color theory and how to choose the right paint color for your home, please see the accompanying resource.
