Why is Wildlife in My Yard?

In many cases where nuisance animals invade someone’s home, the yard is often the main reason why they were attracted there in the first place. Yards are a place of shelter, food, and enjoyment for many different types of wildlife.

For birds, some yards are filled with safe places to build nests, easy sources of food, and protection from predators. For rodents, some yards are excellent sources of shelter, have easy entry into homes and other warm areas, and have tons of food options.

More often than not, nuisance wildlife comes onto properties because they can find food very easily. This often comes in the form of easy access to trash or pet food, an abundance of their preferred food, or a garden ripe with vegetables.

In addition, access to shelter and warmth can also draw many animals to a particular yard. If you want to know more, visit wildlifepest.org to learn more about wildlife behavior.

Hire a Professional

If despite your best efforts, wildlife does get into your yard, there is a great way to get them off your property for good. Professional wildlife removal companies, such as All Star Animal Trapping, can get rid of any type of nuisance wildlife from your yard while keeping you, your family, and your pets safe from any disease.

In addition, professional wildlife removal companies can work with you to prevent future animal invasions, offering suggestions and even installing some prevention measures.

 Remove Easy Food Sources

As mentioned earlier, a yard that is ripe with easy access to food is a yard almost all nuisance animals will visit. To get rid of this attraction, you can take many simple steps that limit easy food sources. Be sure to always secure your trash and pet food, as these are two very common attractants.

In addition, bird feeders can often bring in squirrels and unwanted birds, such as pigeons or swallows. If you have fruit trees, be sure to pick up any fallen fruit, as rodents and raccoons alike love fruit.

Clean Up Your Yard

One step that could require some effort is simply cleaning up your yard. This can be as simple or as thorough as you want to make it. Some of the best steps to take are cleaning up any wood piles, debris piles, or areas where trash accumulates.

These are havens that rodents, snakes, and their food sources love to hang out in. In addition, keeping any tall grass or weeds trimmed can keep rodents, insects, and other small animals away. If you have many large trees that provide great shelter for many birds, squirrels, and even raccoons, you may want to consider cutting back on the trees.

Consider a Fence

While putting in a fence can be costly, it is one of the most surefire ways to keep wildlife from entering your yard. Depending on the type of fence you put in, some can be ineffective on certain types of animals. Rodents can often find a gap in almost any fence.

Some animals can tunnel underneath the fence. However, for the most part, most nuisance wildlife species will be kept out by a fence. Be sure to think about putting in a fence that extends below the ground a little bit to keep most animals out of your yard.

Secure Your Garden

If you love your garden, you surely want to protect it from wildlife. In securing your garden, you will also give animals less of a reason to come into your yard. To keep your garden off-limits, you could consider putting up some chicken wire around the perimeter of your plants.

This will keep most types of animals out. In addition, put some chicken wire above your plants to keep birds and squirrels out.
