How to Remove Countertops and Sink Yourself

Tearing out old countertops/removing countertops sounds like a big job. Just the thought of it can have many ready to call someone else to do it for them. If you take the time to research how to tear out old countertops/removing countertops effectively and allow yourself time, it should not be such an overwhelming job.

With any DIY project, it is always good to be prepared. Gather everything you will need so that it is available and in reach. This will help speed up the process on how to remove countertops/removing countertops.

  • The first thing to do before starting any demolition work (removing countertops) is to turn off the water lines for the sink. You will need to do the same for the gas. Under the sink, there are valves that control the water. There is also a valve for the gas behind the stove. Make sure they are turned off completely. You can use a wrench to tighten them and make sure they are tight.
  • The next thing to do will be removing the sink or cooktop. If there are screws underneath the countertops connecting them, you will need to loosen them. The countertops should start to loosen, but if it does not, then you can gently pry it to continue the removal of the sink from the countertops.
  • If you find that the sink is tiled onto the countertops, then you will have to remove the bit of tile around the edges of the sink. Once it is removed the sink should be able to be lifted up out of the hole easily unless it is attached somehow at the bottom.
  • Check how the counter is installed. In most cases, the screws are embedded underneath the counter into the cabinet. Use a screwdriver to remove any screws that are visible. Once the screws are removed you should be able to lift the countertops off the cabinet space.
  • If your countertops are made of a more difficult laminate, then it will require a bit more force. You may have to use a saw or other type of prying device. Using the saw or prying device, wedge it between the countertops and the base of the cabinet. This will aid in removing or cutting through the screws that are attaching the countertops to the cabinet.

By following the steps listed above you will successfully know how to tear out old countertops/how to remove countertops. It cost little to nothing to remove your countertops so you can keep that money in your pocket or use it toward an upgrade for your replacement countertops. When you see how easy this job was, you may feel comfortable installing the new countertops on your own.
