Your siding is an important part of your home, and it shouldn’t be neglected. It provides insulation, protects your home from the sun, and increases your property value with its aesthetic appeal.

However, if your siding is damaged or otherwise in poor condition it can have precisely the opposite effect on your home.

So, in this article, we’re going to walk through some of the key ways that you can tell whether or not your siding is due a replacement – and what to do about it. Let’s get started!

It’s Been Recently Damaged

This may seem obvious, but it’s important that you spend some time checking the outside of your home for visible damage to your siding. There are a number of possible reasons why it might be damaged, but the most common one is damage caused by violent storms.

Branches and debris can be easily knocked by high winds into the outside wall, causing damage and problems all up the side of your home.

Aside from being aesthetically problematic, damaged siding can let moisture and dampen into the facade of your home, potentially causing issues with mold and rot if left too long.

The best way to prevent this is to make sure that any trees positioned close to the house are well pruned and that if a storm is expected to secure any items that may be blown about by the wind.

This includes deck chairs and outdoor furniture. Reassure your neighbors that you have done so yourself and you can hope that they will likewise do the same!

The Paint or Wallpaper is Peeling Constantly

In some cases, maybe you can simply throw on another lick of paint, should the peeling simply be a result of age, with the underlying wood still intact.

In many cases, however, the problem goes deeper. When paint or wallpaper peels this can be a sign that the underlying material has become waterlogged, moldy, or otherwise ruined. This is a bad sign that it may be time to seek a siding replacement.

Not only are peeled sidings unsightly, but they also indicate deeper problems that left untreated could cause you bigger problems down the line. Worst-case scenarios can include mold and rot taking root in the structural parts of your home an absolute nightmare for any homeowner.

High Electricity Bills

One indication that your siding isn’t doing its job is if your electricity bills seem to keep climbing. When siding is damaged, or non-functional, it means that you end up with poor insulation against the elements.

Poor insulation means thermal leakage, and higher bills for air-conditioning and heating, as your thermostat struggles to keep your home at a reasonable temperature.

This disparity on your bills becomes especially obvious during the wintertime, so try to make sure you deal with this problem before the cold weather rolls in!

Frequent Maintenance issues

Does it seem as though not a fortnight goes by without you having to do something to maintain your siding? Does the wind keep knocking it out of place, or does it seem like the wood just isn’t what it used to be? The average lifespan of house siding for all types of material, falls between 15 and 40 years, less if it’s not properly maintained.

A spike in maintenance issues can be a sign that that lifespan is coming to an end, and it may ultimately be simpler (and less expensive) to find a siding replacement service near you .
