Here are ways you can maintain your tools to make them last longer:

Ensure Lubrication

For tools that are used frequently, it’s crucial to make sure they are well lubricated, at least once a week. Most importantly, check that the moving parts are well- oiled.

Lubrication includes applying an engine oil/grease to moving parts, internal moving components, and every other part that needs to be oiled.

While lubricating, you also need to make sure the right type of lubricant is being used for each mechanical tool component.

You can check the manufacturer’s recommendations to choose the right one.

Be Neat

Ensuring your tools are properly cleaned is an everyday maintenance tip. Dust, grime, debris might begin to appear and the tool might start to rust.

To prevent this, you should make sure you wipe it with a damp rag after every use.

Also keep the storage area neat, whether you store your tools in a box or you hang it on a shelf, having a neat environment is very important.

Sharpen Important Components

Some tools are designed for cutting, as such you need to ensure that these parts maintain their sharpness.

If they are not well sharpened, they become useless. You shouldn’t wait till you need them before you sharpen them. Example of such tools includes; drill bits, screwdrivers, cutters, etc

In the case of edged tools, you can sharpen them by grinding. This could be by using the old-fashioned stone wheel or the modern bench grinder.

Ensure you wear protective goggles, ear muffs, and avoid loose-fitting clothes while sharpening your tools.

Know Your Mechanical Tools

Before using a tool, ensure you know its function. You should also know the expected lifespan, warranty information, and other issues and fixes.

When getting a toolset, check the quality of the toolbox, the strength of the grip, and the selection of tools in the toolbox.

Schedules ensure organized activities. Having set times for repairs and maintenance helps mechanical tools last longer.

It lets you know what needs to be inspected and fixed on time. Examples of scheduled repairs are:

  • Checking gearboxes for lubrication, vibration, and damage to parts

  • Running torque checks on bolts. Bolts can elongate or creep over time
  • Checking friction materials, gaskets, and bearings for wear and replacement
  • Ensure bearings are well lubricated as they use a great amount of force to function properly
  • Seal checks to prevent bearing raceway contamination
