The average American spends almost $1,500 a month on non-essentials. While some of these purchases fall under categories like dining out, much of what we buy are material possessions. We buy clothes, decor items, and tons of other things we don’t really need.

We’re not saying you should become a minimalist, but these spending habits have one end – a cluttered home. Unfortunately, these items can be difficult to part with, as we have a tendency to attach emotional feelings to them.

  1. Invest in a Storage Unit

One question you may be asking yourself is “How to get rid of stuff I still need?” This is a common problem for people who are moving, downsizing, etc. You need to remove those items so you can sell your current home, but don’t will need them in the future.

In this case, we recommend renting a storage unit. But before you do, check out this list of do’s and don’ts of renting a unit and storing your items.

  1. Declutter Your Home One Room at a Time

Learning how to get rid of too much stuff can feel overwhelming. We recommend breaking the project down into one room at a time, which will be more manageable.

The trickiest spaces are going to be bedrooms, kitchens, basements, attics, garages, and anywhere else possessions tend to build up. Start with the heavily cluttered rooms first rather than saving the hardest areas for last.

  1. Learn How to Let Go

One of the most important lessons of decluttering is learning how to let things go. We understand the desire to hold onto sentimental items. You should keep important things from family members, especially those who have passed.

However, don’t allow yourself to form an attachment to everything in your house. Hold fast to the sacred rule of decluttering. If you don’t love it, need it, or use it – it needs to go.

For example, if you see clothing in your closet you haven’t worn in over a year, you’re unlikely to wear it anytime soon, if ever. Get rid of it. This is essential for learning how to get rid of stuff.

  1. Come Up With a Sorting System

When going through each room and learning how to get rid of excess stuff, use a simple sorting system of boxes. You should have three boxes to help you differentiate items into three categories:

  • Throw away
  • Donate
  • Sell

You may be surprised how much money you can get selling unwanted items online, like on Facebook or Craigslist. Anything you don’t sell can go to charity. Items that have no value or quality can be thrown away.

  1. Get Organized

Finally, decluttering you home once and for all means getting organized. Whether we’re talking about clothes, keepsakes, documents, or books, everything needs a designated space and organizational system.

For example, if you save bills, receipts, and other important documents, organize them into folders based on date and content. Clutter comes from having too much stuff, but it also comes from disorganization.
