The exterior paint and finish of your house give your home an identity. It also protects your home from harsh weather conditions.

The painting design of the exterior, thus, becomes a significant decision. An exterior painting project involves many elements before the paintwork.

Apart from selecting the correct type of color that would protect your home from the prevalent weather, the activities before the actual painting job are crucial.

Therefore, you must select an experienced and proficient painting contractor for your exterior painting project .

Power Washing

Before beginning the work on the exterior of the house, you should power wash the surfaces. Power washing is a simple yet effective technique that removes dirt and old paint from the home exterior.

The exterior walls are habitats for different insects and birds. Droppings from birds and wall crawlers like house lizards are often found on the wall surfaces.

The animal waste sticks to walls and solidifies over a period making it difficult to remove. Some house walls may also have honey bees or hornet infestation.

Even after successful removal, there may still be some dirt attached to the walls.

As you can imagine, removing such dirt is not easy and can be expensive. Power washing offers an effective and affordable way to clean such surfaces.

The machine uses a 2500-3000 psi nozzle that sprays water with high pressure to blow off tough dirt and debris away. It provides a clean surface to carry out the repair, maintenance, and paintwork.

Repair And Maintenance

After power washing, your home exterior is clean, and you can carry out necessary repair and maintenance work before the paint coats are applied. A professional paint contractor uses this opportunity to fill in the cracks and holes with fillers.

Often, the exterior of your house has several attachments or extensions. You may have a covered patio or doorways before painting.

However, these sections may need repairs before you start painting to ensure that the walls have no weak points, leading to the paint coats running quickly.

Your paint contractor conducts a detailed inspection of the home and analyses the necessary repair and maintenance work.

Weathering Damages

The external walls are exposed to all types of weather conditions. As a result, they begin to wear through chipping and cracks. Some of the exterior chips and loose paintwork are taken care of by power washing.

However, to prepare the walls for a clear coat of paint, the walls need to be scrapped as the walls may have developed pockets of imperfect paintwork due to weather conditions. An experienced paint contractor aware of the climatic conditions and the related damages is crucial.

The contractor can conduct a simple inspection of the exterior walls by tapping around the places of imperfection to reveal the source of the problem.

A hollow sound denotes the origin of the problem. Scraping the paint from these regions provides a more even surface. It also helps to secure the new coat of paint, adding to the durability of the paint coat.

The gaps between the walls contract and expand according to the weather, which leads to further damage.

It is essential to take care of the gaps with caulk. Caulking seals the regions where walls come together or act as a repair paste. Your contractor may remove the old caulk and replace it with a new layer before the new paintwork.

Masking

Masking is crucial to protect your windows, wall decorations, fixtures, window panes, and roof sections. You do not want to damage these with paint splashes. Therefore, your paint contractor covers them with masks.

3M™ Drop films are a popular choice among paint contractors, but other masking materials like plastics, brown paper, and Visqueen are also available.

Paint Selection

Color selection is the most significant part of the project. You may select one primary color and one for highlights and borders. Alternatively, you can choose a different paint scheme altogether after consulting your paint contractor.

If your house is in a gated community, the color choices may be limited as the color scheme may need to match the overall aesthetics.

The quality of the paint is another essential aspect. High-quality paint may be more expensive; however, it may last longer, and you may not need to paint your walls for a longer time.

However, depending on your budget and needs, you can select the print quality that best suits you. The painting process can be more elaborate depending on your requirements and your painting contractor’s recommendations.
