What Can Cause Damage?

Strong winds are one type of weather that can cause damage. During windstorms, high winds can blow shingles off. Tree branches and other objects can fall on top of your roof.

Hail can also damage your roof, particularly in fall and spring when hailstorms are more common. Hail can create marks, and in some instances, holes in your roof. These may not be evident until the next storm.

Rain damage is another common issue. Intense rainstorms can cause roof damage, with water then leaking down. This can cause mold and rot, which can impact your health and wellbeing.

Conduct a Damage Assessment

If a storm hits your home and you feel that it may have damaged your roof, it’s important to conduct a thorough assessment as soon as it’s safe.

Externally, look for missing shingles, or shingles that are bent or cracked. You can also check your gutter for bits of crushed shingles. These are signs that your roof may be exposed and vulnerable to future damage.

You can also check your roof’s interior for signs of damage. Head to your attic or the highest floor and look for sagging or discoloration, which can be a sign of water damage. You can also check for leaks.

Talk to Your Insurance Agent

If you do find damage that needs to be repaired, the next thing you need to do is speak to your insurance agent. You’ll need to figure out what your insurance does and doesn’t cover.

Generally, most policies should cover weather-related damage. Make sure that you document all damage that has occurred, as well as keep any receipts.

Other factors that can impact whether or not your insurance will help cover the costs include your roof’s age and where you live. Speaking with an agent can clear up and uncertainties.

Work with a Professional

After you figure out what your insurance can cover, it’s time to go about fixing your roof.

Depending on the severity of the damage, some pieces may require repair. In more extreme cases, you may need to look into a replacement roof. Speak with a reputable roofing company, and have them come and service your roof.
