More than simply a place to sleep, a children’s bedroom is often a place to play. You want the space to be practical, comfortable, and fun and the rug you choose can have a big impact.

An area rug often acts as a visual anchor in the space, but in a children’s bedroom, it also gives the kids a soft surface to sit, play and read.

Have Fun

A child’s space should be inspiring and happy. A rug adds color, pattern, and personality to a room, so feel free to have fun with a rug for a children’s room.

Does the room have a theme? This may be a color scheme involving bright colors or soft, muted tones, or something more specific such as space or woodland.

Think about how various colors and patterns fit with the theme when looking at rug styles. You can also pick out colors from other elements in the room, bedding, artwork, to create a cohesive look.

There are many rug styles to choose from that would work well within a child’s bedroom, from modern to traditional, which feature fun prints and patterns.

Consider colors and patterns your child prefers to help you choose a rug that suits their personality and the room will feel like theirs.

Keep in mind the overall feel of the space when choosing a rug for a child’s bedroom. You want to create a space your child will love, and the right rug can play a big part.

Go Bigger

Depending on the size of the bedroom, it is often recommended to choose the biggest rug you can to cover the floor space and provide a soft and comfortable surface.

The rug should be big enough for kids to play on, spread out, so it’s often best to choose a bigger rug, rather than something too small.

If you’re covering wooden or tiled floors, a bigger area rug serves a practical purpose, though even if the room has carpet, you can still layer a stylish area rug on top.

Layering smaller rugs on top of larger ones creates fun and interest. If layering rugs, look at contrasting textures that work well together.

You can use a rug to connect and anchor the various pieces of furniture. If it’s a large room, you could place the rug in the center of the room, or use it to create a designated play area.

To get the right rug size, measure the space and lay down the tape to see how the rug might work in the room.

Consider Practicality

A rug for a kid’s room should be practical as well as fun. Children often sit or lay on the floor, so choosing an area rug made from soft material is key.

When choosing a rug for a child’s room, durability is an important factor to consider. Wool rugs are an extremely durable option that is also soft and cozy.

Wool rugs are a worthwhile investment, but you should also consider colors that won’t show dirt and stains as easily.

A white or light-colored rug may not be the best choice for a children’s room. Kids can be messy, so you want a rug that can hold up against wear and tear.

The style and material you choose may depend on the overall aesthetic of your home, as well as how your child uses the space.

If they love playing with lego, you may not want to choose a rug with long piles that the small pieces will get caught in. If they love laying down to read, a cozy, thick rug may be preferred.

Also, get a rug pad to stop the rug from slipping. Kids may be running or jumping and you don’t want them to trip over if the rug moves.
