Everything You Need to Know to Start Gardening

If you’re like most people, however, you’ve been hesitant to start gardening because you don’t know how to go about it. After all, you don’t want to invest a bunch of time and labor into a garden if it’s going to fail.

We’re here to help you move past this hurdle. Keep reading for everything you need to know to grow a successful garden.

What Types of Plants Do You Want to Grow?

First, think about your gardening goals. What is the purpose of your garden? Do you want to grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, or a myriad of each?

Identifying the types of plants you want to grow will help you create a layout for your backyard garden. For example, squash, pumpkins, melons, and cucumbers have long vines that like to spread. You’ll need to provide plenty of space or create a verticle climb for these vines.

What Plants Can Grow in Your Climate?

After you decide the general types of plants you want to grow, you need to do a little more research regarding your local climate. Many plants are picky when it comes to their ideal growing environment.

For example, if you live in Montana, growing pineapple trees is out of the question. Conversely, most strains of huckleberries only grow in high, mountainous regions.

Before you start gardening, get a better understanding of what will and will not grow in your area to avoid wasting your time.

What Gardening Tools Do You Need?

Next, let’s talk about the gardening tools you’ll need to establish and maintain your garden. Landscaping is hard work. However, the right tools will make your life much easier.

On top of buying the right tools, you should also take some time learning how to use them properly. For example, here are some gardening tips on different spade uses.

What’s the Best Way to Nurture Your Plants?

Finally, before you start gardening, conduct some research on how to best nurture each plant. Some plants will require maximum sunlight while others prefer shade. Different plants will also require varying amounts of water.

Furthermore, find out what type of landscaping you need to do before planting your seeds. Do you need to till and aerate the soil first? What about adding manure or fertilizer to your soil?

Another thing to consider is pest control. How will you keep destructive bugs like slugs and grasshoppers out of your garden? It would be a tragedy if you lost the bulk of your harvest to bugs and insects.

Ready to Start Gardening?

Creating a productive and successful garden takes hard work and dedication. You need to water your plants, remove weeds, and keep a wary eye out for pests. Follow our guide to start gardening on the right foot.
