Does your home have a crawl space? Depending on where you live in the country, you may have a slab foundation, a basement, or a crawl space.

Crawl spaces have advantages over basements and concrete slabs. They are less expensive than basements and lift the house off the ground so that plumbing and ductwork can be more easily serviced.

Crawl Space Repair: 3 Major Signs Your Crawl Space is Damaged

When you suspect that you need crawl space repair, you need to act quickly. Keep reading to learn the 3 major signs that you’re dealing with crawl space damage.

1. Musty Odors

If you smell musty odors, it’s possible that you have a damaged crawl space. The odor comes about when there’s decaying debris, animals, leaking pipes, and moisture from the weather in the crawl space.

Air circulates through space and comes directly into the house. There are no escaping bad odors from underneath. Look into the problem before it gets worse.

2. Cracks in the Foundation

If you start to notice cracks in the foundation of your home, you need to act right away on repairing your crawl space.

Foundation cracks signal a serious structural problem and should not be overlooked.

As soon as you notice cracks larger than 1/8″, have the foundation and crawl space inspected to avoid bigger issues down the line.

Get to the cause of the cracks so repairs can be made and the underlying issue addressed.

3. Moisture

Recognizing crawl space damage is critical to keeping your home in good shape. If you have moisture in the crawl space, you may end up with a myriad of problems.

When water seeps through the foundation walls or you have leaking pipes or condensation from the air, moisture develops in the crawl space.

When a space like that gets too moist, it creates an environment where fungi, insects, and termites thrive.

Termites and other insects will cause the deterioration of the wood that holds up your house.

You also have the risk of mold and mildew. This is dangerous for you and your family.

If you notice an increase in allergy or asthma symptoms or chronic respiratory infections, have a professional inspect your crawl space for signs of moisture.
